'After Baines'

iArt Gallery presents Rhodes University graduate John Walters’ Masters work, 'After Baines', an exhibition about contemporary history painting, and what it is and can be today. The work also focuses on the idea of identity formation through history (and the learning of it), specifically in relation to the geographical setting of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. Walters’ investigation of the life and the working practice of Thomas Baines is conducted in relation to the broader discourse of painting and his experience of being a young white artist of British descent, and takes into account his own personal complicity in the constructions of ‘the figure of Baines’ both visually and textually.
