‘Wieg’ runs from the 13th October 2016 – 19th November 2016 at SMITH, 56 Church Street, Cape Town.
In this collection of paintings and painted-upon photographs, Gaigher uses the notion of ‘wieg’, or ‘vacillate’, as her method to negotiate a personal archive of photographs and audio recordings collected from her day-to-day experiences. Moving between this archive of recordings and the recollection of the lived experiences themselves, Gaigher extracts new translations of this information through the process of painting.
“The word ‘wieg’ accurately describes the way that I’ve moved around and worked; highlighting an uncertainty towards the photos I’ve taken, reiterating them into painting, intermittently guided by scenarios I’ve found myself in, knowing I have a show coming up. It’s an unpredictable process; leading up to the cut off time when everything will be almost forcefully pulled together, being dependent on chance and of course my choice to react, include or ignore.”
– Jeanne Gaigher
Re-navigating these recordings of her personal experiences, Gaigher produces multiple scenes for the viewer to move through and experience a personal sense of the disjointedness of the familiar.
