Following on the success of last year’s lecture series, WAM will once again present in-depth insights into the various exhibitions, artists and artworks included in the 2017 exhibitions programme. This year, for the first time, the lecture series is proudly sponsored by Stephan Welz™ & Co., a leading local auctioneer. The lectures take place inside the museum, giving participants the opportunity to view the actual artworks discussed, both before and after the talks. This series is for art enthusiasts, academics, students and anyone wanting to grow their knowledge of the arts. Take advantage of this opportunity to engage with people who share your interest in art and expand your knowledge of the visual arts of Africa. The lectures take place on Wednesday evenings from 18h30-19h30.
19 April – Overtime: representations, values and imagined futures of ‘classical African Art’
Presented by Tatenda Magaisa and Katleho Shoro.
This lecture will look at the idea of ‘classical African Art’ having relevance and meaning over time. This is a critical part of the collaborative exhibition that asked students, who have worked at WAM, to explore WAM’s collection.
3 May – Show No Pain
Presented by Michael MacGarry
The artist will talk about his exhibition that includes ten key artworks that manifest various forms of lens-based media across narrative cinema, multi-channel video installation, animation and experimental film.
10 May – Moses Tladi (1903-1959)
Presented by Sekhubami Tladi
The lecture will explore the life and work of one of South Africa’s great, but largely unknown landscape painters, Moses Tladi. This exhibition, presents a valuable opportunity to consider the historical and political context in which these landscapes were produced.
17 May – Objects and their Worlds
Presented by Stacey Vorster
Since 2013, the Wits History of Art Department has undertaken a series of projects with postgraduate students focused on the concept of an ‘object biography’. In addition to giving insight into the project, Wits Art History lecturer, Stacey Vorster, will consider how tracing the lives of objects is not only a useful art historical lens, but engages our humanity.
24 May – Artwork in focus
Presented by George Mahashe
The artist himself, George Mahashe will delve into his body of work currently on display as part of theLifescapes exhibition. Expect a fascinating discussion around the role of portrait photography in contemporary South Africa.
31 May – One Colour at a Time: Contemporary Screenprints
(Lecturer to be confirmed)
In June this year, WAM in collaboration with Artist Proof Studios and Prints on Paper will open an exhibit featuring various South African artists that have produced screenprints, in recent years. The lecture will be a sneak preview of the content of the exhibition.
The lectures are limited to a maximum of 80 participants. Art lovers should book early to avoid disappointment.
