Coral Spencer Domijan's 'BODY of work'
Coral Spencer Domijan at artSPACE durbanWalking into the gallery, the first thing the one sees is two panels depicting an iridescent public swimming pool – reminiscent of public swimming pools during apartheid – ‘white’ bodies lolling and splashing in the Durban summer heat, while the shadow of a shark circles below. There is an acute sense of movement in the painting. An overweight man literally bobs at the side of the pool, while a swimming child splashes lightly on the surface. Though humorous, in the sense that it speaks ominously to the fear-driven Jaws generation, coupled with the title, the work can also speak of a particular kind of ‘white’ paranoia at the time of transition in South Africa. It is an ominous first impression, and one that greatly influenced my subsequent experience of the exhibition – framed within a critique of middle class, predominantly ‘white’ suburban South Africa (Things Change).

Coral Spencer Domijan's 'BODY of work'
Coral Spencer Domijan at artSPACE durbanCoral Spencer Domijan's painting focuses on the way that light constructs the human form. With a keen regard for what she calls ‘high skill’, her interest in body language and relationships to self and others is a central theme in her work. With 'Body of Work', the artist continues to exercise her quest for consumate technique, as she makes dramatic use of the interaction between light, water and human skin.
