'Grammars of Desire'

Naadira Patel at Parking Gallery

This installation is comprised of moments from different amusement parks: Gold Reef City, South Africa; Magic Land, Dakar; Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi; Dubai Mall, Dubai; Rand Easter Show, South Africa; Universal Studios, Singapore. Roller coasters: speed, thrill and desire, the underwhelming sense of the spectacular – all of this is an invitation to contemplate the multiple systems and structures of impossible imaginations.

'Grammars of Desire' marks the beginning of a long term project that sets out to explore the role these spaces occupy in contemporary urban landscapes as demarcated areas of desire, consumption, amusement, spectacle, fantasy and pleasure.

The motif of the rollercoaster as a vehicle for speaking about the thrill of desire is central. This project attempts to build a language around the construction of fantasy by piecing together fragments and moments that are shiny but grotesque, fantastic but depressing.

The installation will grow, develop and shift over the 4-week period, reconfiguring new takes on the spectacle. Included in the program will be discussions, speakers and performances which will be announced weekly.
