Willie Bester presents a solo exhibition of watercolours and collage watercolours, focusing on some of the social and political issues surrounding water in urban areas. As a medium, watercolour dates from the early stages of Willie’s career, and the exhibition includes both recent work and older works.

A portfolio of prints paying tribute to the life and work of Cecil Skotnes.  Contributing artists include Willie Bester, David Brown, Norman Catherine, Peter Clarke, Stephen Inggs, William Kentridge, David Koloane, Fritha Langerman, Louis Maqhubela, Malcolm Payne, Pippa Skotnes and Gavin Younge.  Proceeds from the sale of the portfolio will go towards the newly founded Cecil Skotnes Scholarship at the Michaelis School of Fine Art.

'The Rainbow Nation'

This year, the Hague Sculpture Festival focuses on South Africa, with more than 50 sculptures by major artists of the past 60 years from 29 May to 9 September on the Lange Voorhout and from 8 June to 30 September in Museum Beelden aan Zee. The artists at the exhibition range across three generations. The first generation is represented by artists including Edoardo Villa, Sidney Kumalo and Noria Mabasa. Andries Botha, Willie Bester, Jane Alexander and Angus Taylor are among the second generation artists. Works by artists such as Wim Botha, Paul Edmunds, Nicolas Hlobo, Nandipha Mntambo and Claudette Schreuders represent the third and youngest generation. Nelson Mandela International Day will be celebrated in The Hague on Wednesday, July 18 with the unveiling of the Nelson Mandela monument by Dutch sculptor Arie Schippers.

Resistance art icon Willie Bester shows a selection of his characteristic paintings and sculptural assemblages that incorporate recycled material and found objects in a continuing interrogation of political injustices and human rights issues, focussing specifically on the position of children.
