Description

This limited offer consists of Penny Siopis’s Shame: Pools, Lisa Brice’s Untitled, and Claudette Schreuders’s The Bystander 2.

All the artists in this collection are well known for working in different media, Siopis and Brice are painters, while Schreuders is a sculptor. Each of these artists brings something of their dominant medium to these prints. Siopis brings out the suggestive image from formless medium, Brice explores the expressive potential of mark-making and Schreuders imbues her figures with a deep solidity at odds with the airiness of the print.

While these artist concerns are quite varied, a link made evident in these prints is an interest in interiority and how it may be embodied in a medium.

Penny Siopis, Shame: Pools
Three-plate colour etching, with collaged plastic found objects and hand stamping
Paper: 87 x 39.5 cm
Edition of 60

Penny Siopis (b. 1953) is based in Cape Town, South Africa.

This is a rare and significant print from one of the country’s top artists.

“In this series, I reflect on the public and psychological state of shame in our current times. However powerfully shame is recognized as part of our human condition it is difficult to represent. Like love, which may be shame’s antidote, it is often only manifest in clichéd and mannered forms. Shame: pools deliberately uses such forms and awkward child-like references to mark shame as a primary psychological state of self-exposure a child experiences and to which the adult self returns.”

– Penny Siopis

Lisa Brice, Untitled
Three-colour hand printed lithographic print
50.5 x 66 cm
Edition of 60

Lisa Brice (b. 1968) is based in London, United Kingdom.

This untitled print, created and produced especially for Editions for ArtThrob, is a highly expressive lithograph which pursues the theme of adolescent love and desire – the focus of the work presented on Brice’s acclaimed 2007 exhibition at the Goodman Gallery, Cape Town, titled ‘Base One Two Three’.

Claudette Schreuders, The Bystander 2
9-colour Offset Lithograph on archival cotton rag paper
38 x 55.5 cm
Edition of 60

Claudette Schreuders (b. 1973) is based in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Bystander 2 follows a line of work that seeks to ‘make public that which is private’. The work, a remarkably skilled piece of printmaking, playfully uncovers the middle-class condition. Its darker overtones work to uncover the lighter green, yellows and ochre that form its details.
