Following on other recent shifts in the local gallery scene – WHATIFTHEWORLD and SMAC opening additional spaces in Johannesburg – Commune.1 has just announce it’s relocation to Vancouver. The below was extracted from a mail out received this morning:
Dear Commune.1 supporters and friends,
In our dedication to remain a dynamic and forward thinking organisation and to best create an environment for our artists that provides both artistic momentum and support, Commune.1 has taken the first steps towards developing what we feel is a model that will crystallise our international presence. Over the 5 years that we have been at 64 Wale Street we have received unprecedented support, from framers and suppliers to other galleries, artists and clients, the energy and commitment to building and sustaining a world-class art community has been ever-present and unflinching. We will carry this support with us as we embark on the next phase of Commune.1’s life. Over the next few months we will continue to push boundaries locally with selected exhibitions in temporary urban spaces, presenting our artists to varied audiences and new responses. Following this, we will relocate to a new permanent space in Vancouver. We are sincere in our belief that offering exposure to our growing stable of artists in an international arena will enhance the contextual energy of all that they are committed to. We thank everybody that has been central to our success in Cape Town, it is this support that has given us the sustenance that we will draw on to expand and grow our organisation in continued dedication to the inimitable contemporary art of the continent that we are committed to serving.
From the team at Commune.1, we look forward to welcoming you into our new space in 2017 in Vancouver. From the 1st August 2016 the space at 64 Wale Street will be closed to the public but we will continue updating you all on our upcoming exhibitions in Cape Town.
In gratitude and commitment,
Leigh-Anne and Greg Dale
