No less than six new reviews this week - and all of them on male artists - look at shows across the country. Kathryn Smith finds that the lavish French imported exhibition of twentieth century master Marc Chagall, staged in two cities, does, after all, have relevance in contemporary South Africa, while in Stellenbosch Paul Edmunds puzzles over Alan Alborough's latest, very site specific work in an old converted church. Robin Rhode is a man behaving badly at the National Gallery, says Edmunds, who also reviews Musa Xaba at the Hanel. Eight male artists - four Brits, four locals, showing at Cape Town's AVA on the show 'Ubudoda' are given the onceover by Mgcineni Sobopha, and Sue Williamson is surprised to discover that contrary to expectations, Peet Pienaar's spinoff show at the Brendan Bell Roberts cuts a lot deeper than the already much publicised circumcision video.
