Part-time course in Desktop Publishing,
commencing April 2001

Who should attend? Anyone wishing to focus on combining artistic creativity with progressive technology, with the intention of entering the dynamic field Desktop Publishing. This course takes an in-depth look at Desktop Publishing using cutting-edge industry software. It is designed to give students a solid foundation for a creating visually exciting portfolio. Emphasis will be placed on creative and effective use of the software as tools.

Classes are kept small for individual attention. Each student will have the pleasure of working on state of the art Apple Macintosh G4 machines in a hi-tech environment.

Students must be computer literate and be able to use a popular word processing program (like MS Word).

The course is run by a dynamic team of experienced and successful designers and artists who are actively involved in both the local New Media industry as well as in the South African Fine Art world. Students are thus ensured both a cross-pollination of creative ideas and skills, as well as enriching, open tuition.

The 3-month course comprises the following subject modules:

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Macromedia Freehand
  • QuarkXPress

Part-time course in Web Animation,
commencing May 2001

Who should attend? Anyone wishing to focus on combining artistic creativity with progressive technology, with the intention of entering the dynamic field of New Media Design. This course takes an in-depth look at web animation and its various applications using cutting edge software. It is designed to give students a solid foundation for creating dynamic web animations. Emphasis will be placed on creative and effective use of the software as tools.

Classes are kept small for individual attention. Each student will have the pleasure of working on state of the art Apple Macintosh G4 machines in a hi-tech environment.

Students are required to be proficient in Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Freehand.

Part-time course in Digital Video Editing & Motion Graphics,
commencing October 2001

Who should attend? Anyone wishing to focus on combining artistic creativity with progressive technology, with the intention of entering the dynamic field of New Media Design. The course takes an in-depth look at Film and Video post-production using cutting edge industry software. It is designed to give students a solid foundation for creating dynamic videos. Students will produce their own video using the most advanced post-production technology available. Emphasis will be placed on creative and effective use of the software as tools.

commencing July 2001

Who should attend? Anyone wishing to focus on combining artistic creativity with progressive technology, with the intention of entering the dynamic field of New Media Design. This course takes an in-depth look at CDRom authoring and its various applications using cutting-edge software. It is designed to give students a solid foundation for creating dynamic interactive presentations. Students will produce their own presentation CDRom using the most advanced technology available. Emphasis will be placed on creative and effective use of the software as tools.

Classes are kept small for individual attention. Each student will have the pleasure of working on state of the art Apple Macintosh G4 machines in a hi-tech environment.

One-year certificate course in Visual Arts,
commencing February 2001

Who should attend? Anyone wanting a broad general qualification in art and design; or needing to bridge the gap to university entrance; or requiring the opportunity to discover the specialty they really want to persue.

The course is a remarkable opportunity for students to develop a variety of fundamental skills and a greater visual vocabulary, preparing the way for further study in preferred areas. The emphasis is on hands-on experience in the studios of the different disciplines offered by the School. The course also forms the foundation year for the 3-year diploma in Fine Art, Graphic Design and Jewellery Design.

The course is run by a dynamic team of lecturers who are specialists in their fields, which will ensure both cross-pollination and enriching, open tuition. It consists of 3 modules, the final module of the year allowing students greater focus on one of the chosen disciplines.

Course content for this Foundation Course in Visual Arts includes the following:

  • "Ways of seeing", a short course focusing on art appreciation and the skills of art interpretation.

Full-time course in Fine Art,
commencing February 2001

Who should attend? Anyone wanting a broad general qualification in Fine Art, with specialisation in either painting or drawing or mixed media or sculpture.

The course begins with the one-year foundation course in Visual Arts, which is a remarkable opportunity for students to develop a variety of fundamental skills and a greater visual vocabulary, preparing the way for further study in preferred areas in the second and third years.

The course is run by a dynamic team of lecturers who are specialists in their fields, which will ensure both cross-pollination and enriching, open tuition.

Course content for this full-time course in Fine Art includes:

First year:
Foundation Course in Visual Arts (see above)

Second year:
Students focus on a chosen discipline in order to develop intellectual and practical skills. Admission is dependent on 1st year assessment or an interview and presentation of a portfolio.

Third year:
Supports students through a period of hard work and consolidation. The diploma is presented after the student has held a one-person exhibition and the work has been assessed by an external examiner. Admission is dependent on 2nd year assessment or an interview and presentation of a portfolio.

Full-time course in Photography,
commencing February 2001

Who should attend? Anyone wanting to become an effective, professional photographer.

The course is run by a dynamic team of lecturers who are specialists in their fields, which will ensure both cross-pollination and enriching, open tuition.

Weekly informal critique sessions with monthly marking sessions are an integral part of the feedback and assessment process of this course, as are the tutorial sessions held at tertiary library facilities which research historical and contemporary photography. Bi-monthly exhibitions at an external venue are encouraged to give students experience in mounting and their work and receiving criticism.

The visual communication component of the course is covered in lectures, slide whose and visits to exhibitions and galleries, in which discussions of aesthetics and visual literacy form an important component.

Admission is based on:

  • A recent portfolio of between 5 and 10 works;
  • An interview
  • A motivational essay on photography.
The 3-year full-time course in photography comprises the following subject modules:

First year:

  • The study of graphics and chemistry as well as photo-theory.
  • Processing and printing own work (black / white only)
  • A series of practical projects to learn and test basic camera technique
  • Art theory: ways of seeing and design

Second year:

  • Introduction to colour photography, studio lighting and related computer work
  • Further studies in theory of photography, visual communication and black and white photography
  • Students are encouraged to explore various aspects of photography to prepare them to specialise in their third year.
Third year:
  • Increased emphasis on own research and essay writing with a tandem practical programme of won work specialisation and professional portfolio production.
  • Related computer / digital work
  • Business Management and business aspects of photography as a profession.
  • The course culminates in a final dissertation, which must accompany the student�s final portfolio presentation. Third-year students mentor junior students and actively participate in the weekly critique sessions.

Full-time course in Graphic Design,
commencing February 2001

Who should attend? Anyone wanting to become an effective designer and communicator through a wide variety of visual communications and who want to find employment in a professional graphic design practice or as an independent freelance designer. Students are encouraged to develop their own unique visual language based on a thorough knowledge of design principles, the design industry and the appropriate computer technology. The course is run by a dynamic team of lecturers who are specialists in their fields, which will ensure both cross-pollination and enriching, open tuition.

Admission is based on:

  • A recent portfolio of between 5 and 10 works;
  • Academic results (Grade 12 pass or equivalent)
  • An interview
  • A practical selection test (to be held at an appointed time upon registration).
This 2-year course comprises the following subject modules:
