As 2001 draws to a close, we take a look back at the highs and lows of the
year that was. Which South African artists made the greatest impact at home
and abroad? Which galleries and sponsors deserve the most recognition for
their initiatives and support? Artthrob's regular writers have each selected
their top 10 artists and top five exhibitions/projects, and together
compiled lists of the best newcomers, galleries, sponsors, publications and
competitions. Our choices are personal and, with three out of five writers
based in Cape Town, the geographics are skewed. Nonetheless the lists
testify to a remarkable year in which South African artists made major
inroads internationally and continued to mature and flourish at home. The
only person to appear in all five top 10s, making him our Artist of the
Year, is Robin Rhode - his work cited as challenging, fresh, funny and
imaginative. Congratulations to all involved in South African art who made
this such an unforgettable year.
This is the last edition of Artthrob for 2001. Thanks to our readers and
advertisers for your support and best wishes for a fabulous, peaceful
festive season.
