This week: Nic Dawes' review of 'Authentic/Ex-centric' - the parallel exhibition of African and African diaspora artists at the Venice Biennale - has come under fire for having little positive to say about a show that Coco Fusco, writing for thething.net, hails as "a remarkable first step toward establishing a permanent and serious presence for African art in Venice". The editors of ArtThrob believe South African artists' work is strong enough to stand up to lively criticism - but also that important events like this deserve our enthusiastic support. This week, alongside Nic's review, we run extracts from some of the very positive responses that have greeted 'Authentic/Ex-centric' in the international press, and associate curator Emma Bedford describes a broad context for the show in her critique of Harald Szeemann's 'Plateau of Humankind' - in which African art is treated with arrogance and ignorance.
