The Vita Awards at the Goodman
by Sue Williamson

A funny thing happened to the FNB Vita Awards exhibition on its way to Cape Town. After it left Durban in 2001 it abandoned its efforts to become more of a national and less of a Joburg event and took a right turn by mistake and ended up back in the old Transvaal for the 2002 event. At the Goodman Gallery, to be precise. The Goodman Gallery, bless its heart, has always been a strong supporter of the Vitas, but surely it would not have taken very much effort to have found an appropriate venue in Cape Town?

Anway, if it had been here in the mother city I could have reviewed it for ArtThrob. I can tell you though, that Alan Alborough, passed over last time around for his massively labour intensive and compelling project as Standard Bank Award winner, as a nominee this year, produced something considerably less labour intensive and discovered this was the way to win the prize.

For a proper review, you will have to go to the Mail & Guardian online to read what ArtThrob editor Kathryn Smith had to say.
