Documenta artists to be announced
by Sue Williamson

Arguably the most eagerly awaited art event of the new millennium - Documenta 11 as curated by Okwui Enwezor - will be spilling its secrets over the next two weeks at a series of international press conferences.

The invitations, emailed to the art press across the world, read, "I would kindly like to invite you on behalf of Documenta11 to the press conference on April 30, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at the Bali Kino/Cinema, Bahnhofsplatz 1, D-34117 Kassel, Germany.

"Documenta11's fifth platform takes place in Kassel, Germany, from June 8 until September 15, 2002. We will introduce the participating artists and some of their projects, which will be part of the exhibition.

The Artistic Director of Documenta11, Okwui Enwezor, will be answering your questions..."

The small town of Kassel is the traditional seat of Documenta, so it is only appropriate that the first announcement will be made from there. A second conference takes place in Paris on May 3 at 3:00 p.m., at the Musée dArt Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the third in New York on May 8 at 10:00 a.m. at the Goethe-Institut on Fifth Avenue.

Any artist who appears on Documenta has his/her reputation enhanced immeasurably - for William Kentridge, who appeared on the last one in 1998, it was the beginning of his meteoric rise to the top of the international heap. Reportedly, he will be showing again, as will photographer David Goldblatt. For the rest, we will have to wait and see...
