THIS WEEK:

It is not often in this country that a major artist shows completely different bodies of work in two important venues simultaneously, but Penny Siopis can currently be seen both at the Goodman and at the Gertrude Posel. At the Goodman, in a new series of paintings entitled Pinky-Pinky, Siopis uses forms of extreme simplicity combined with collage to investigate the mythical character Pinky-Pinky, while at the Gertrude Posel, 'Sympathetic Magic' explores the relationship between biography, memory and history through the richly detailed painting and installation which have concerned Siopis for the past decade.

Documenta 11 has closed its doors, after pulling in the largest audience in the history of the event. For a statistical overview, see News, while for some personal highlights, check the editor's diary.

Next update: October 1

Kathryn Smith gives a detailed account of what can be expected on the two shows of Penny Siopis. Elsewhere, digital art receives the attention of artists in varying fields at Spark! A workshop and seminar are part of the programme.

Gwen van Embden and Janet Solomon open at the NSA, with a show by Milijana Babic launching the new YAP - Young Artists Project in the media gallery.

In Washington, in 'Newspapers', Siemon Allen investigates the 'imaging' of South Africa through articles in the US press, while Julia Tiffin is one of three artists on show at the Artotheque in Reunion.
