Art South Africa: New Winter Edition on Sale

Berni Searle, the Standard Bank Young Artist for 2003, whose first major solo show in this country opens at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, is the featured cover artist in the latest issue of Art South Africa.

Now four issues old, the magazine is boldly defying its critics, and causing more than a few whisperers to eat their words. Aside from art historian Liese van der Watt's look at Searle's body of work, the latest issue sees Alex Dodd investigates the creative strategies employed by the Johannesburg Art Gallery as a response to the challenges of its inner-city neighbourhood.

Charl Blignaut interviews controversial performance artist Steven Cohen, on a return visit to South Africa after a year spent at festivals in Europe and collaborating with the famous Ballet Atlantique/Rgine Chopinot in France. Sean O'Toole assesses the private portfolios of emerging fashion photographers.

In the reviews section, leading art critic Ivor Powell contemplates Bruce Gordon, which ought to offer a worthwhile comparison piece with Colin Richards' recent ArtThrob review.

Art South Africa is available at Exclusive Books stores countrywide, as well as selected galleries and bookstores, at a cost of R50 per issue.
