Opportunity to collaborate with Christian Boltanski

It is rare that South African artist's are given the opportunity to collaborate with an artist of Christian Boltanski cache. In July 2003 this pipe dream could become a reality.

As part of South London Gallery's forthcoming exhibition on the theme of independence, Christian Boltanski has devised a project whereby artists from around the world are invited to participate in the exhibition by fax. In the recently vacated gallery offices, Christian Boltanski will open his project out to any artist who wishes to participate.

Relying on the principle of starting a rumour, artists from all over the world have been invited to fax through a work during the show on the basis that all those received will be exhibited and then offered for sale as photocopies at 1 each. Whatever the response, the project democratises the exhibition-making process.

The South London Gallery was founded by philanthropist William Rossiter, and opened at its present site at 65 Peckham Road in 1891. The aim of the founding committee was "to bring contemporary art to the working people of South London", and serve as South London's 'National Gallery'.

In 2003, the South London Gallery will separate from Southwark Council, of which it has been a part for nearly a century, and will operate as an independent charitable trust. To celebrate this newly independent status, more than one hundred artists, from Barbara Kruger and Tracey Emin to Keith Tyson and Lawrence Weiner, are contributing work to 'Independence', arguably the most ambitious and experimental exhibition ever staged at the South London Gallery.

Anyone interested in participating should contact Jenny Christensson at the South London Gallery, on telephone +44 207 703 6120.
