Young Artists Project at the NSA
To wrap up the first season of the Young Artists Project at the NSA, a seminar was held on Thursday, March 13 at the NSA Gallery. Focusing on current concerns and new modes of production in the visual arts, the discussions centred on contemporary African identity. Speakers at the event included NSA Gallery curator Storm van Rensburg, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Durban Institute of Technology Virginia MacKenny, award winning choreographer Jay Pather (recently back from a successful run of his cross discipline production of 'Cityscapes' in Johannesburg), the independent writer and arts educator Khwezi Gule, and Janine Petzer, currently registered for her B-Tech in Fine Art at the Durban Institute of Technology.
A small format catalogue on the project, with essays on Milijana Babic, Thando Mama, Lyndon Daniels and Hlengiwe Lushaba, the four contributors to YAP, was launched at the seminar. The catalogue itself provides a platform for young emerging voices, and included new writing by Khwezi Gule, Michael Croeser and Janine Petzer.
