Sam Nhlengethwa Wins Rand Water Commission
Thirty South African artists, amongst them Sam Nhlengethwa, have been selected by Rand Water as part of the utility's Centenary Art Project. The selection process, which started in December last year, was recently completed, and the winning artists have already been commissioned in the form of 25 distinct projects.
The winning works represent a range of styles, and include paintings, drinking fountains, sculpture, poetry, craftwork and ceramics. All artworks are said to be inspired by and celebrate water and the wonders of water. The artworks will be on permanent display in a number of venues, including Rand Water offices and some public places.
Sam Nhlengethwa's selection bodes well for an artist who is steadily garnering a following. According to Johannesburg gallerist Linda Givon: "Of the artists I represent, I would invest in Sam Nhlengethwa. Now is a very good time to buy his work. I am launching him in New York soon."
Doubtlessly Rand Water will be pleased to learn that it may one day garner substantial returns for their recent initiative.
