Babic takes on Europe
by Virginia MacKenny

Milijana Babic, recently featured in Art South Africa as a young artist to watch, has just arrived back from showing her work in the City of Women festival in Croatia (to find out more access their website at www.cityofwomen-a.si).

When Dutch curator Cis Bierinckx, read the article on emerging artists in Art South Africa, she recommended her work to Sabina Potocki, 'City Of Woman' co-ordinator who picked up on Babic's concerns of seeking a place and finding a home which informs so much of her work. Babic, ironically originally from Croatia, and currently enrolled as a Masters student in the Fine Art Department at the Durban Institute of Technology (formerly Technikon Natal), has also been invited to show her work in Utrecht next week in an exhibition entitled 'SMS (Sanctuary Mental Space)'.

Curated by Aryan Kaganof and Dutch artist Dick Tuinder, the show will be a work in process with artists continuing to work during the run of it (see listings). Kaganof will be exhibiting with Nicola Deane, who made a name for herself last year in Durban with her chocolate vulvas cast directly off her person in front of an audience. Unlike the stir the performance caused in Durban, Paris audiences apparently stormed the stage after the show and devoured all 80 vulvas.
