Ijele

Portico and Entrance Porch, Anglican Church, Ufuma, Anambra State, Nigeria Ikem Stanley Okoye

WEBSITE OF THE MONTH

Ijele: Art eJournal of the African World
www.ijele.com

Ijele is an online journal of contemporary art and architecture, art history and criticism, focusing exclusively on the visual creative expressions of artists in Africa, as well as artists of the diaspora. Readers will doubtlessly be familiar with the name Julie McGee, of the documentary 'The Luggage is Still Labelled: Blackness in South African Art'. Ms McGee is an editorial board member of Ijele. Browsing through the eJournal's numerous critical articles, I was personally intrigued by Sabine Marschall's 2001 piece titled 'Negotiating Identity: Urban Community Mural Art in South Africa'. Ms Marschall, a German art historian permanently residing in South Africa, delivers some interesting insights into an area of production rarely given the time it deserves. On the strength of this article alone, there is no doubting that Ijele delivers on its aim to provide a forum for scholarly articles of the highest quality.

NEW LISTINGS

   Pieter Hugo
www.pieterhugo.com

Recently returned from Italy to his hometown, Cape Town-based Pieter Hugo works in a fledgling style I prefer to call 'new documentary'. Readers of the Italian publication Colors will likely be familiar with what I mean, and probably also recognise some of Hugo's images. Over the past year, the photographer worked with professional mentors the likes of Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, and more recently Stefan Ruiz. Unencumbered by any gimmicks, Hugo's site allows for easy browsing of his interesting portfolio.

   João Ferreira Gallery
www.joaoferreiragallery.com

It's new year again and we've probably all made promises about dusting off the cobwebs. Unlike most of us though, João Ferreira has acted on his new year's resolution, delivering a spiffy new site for the new year.
