Lith Printing Course at Cape Town School of Photography
The Cape Town School of Photography is running a short course exploring the making and toning of Lith prints. Due to the nature of the course, only six students can be accommodated.
You need a good working knowledge of the darkroom, negatives to print, as well as conventional black and white prints of these to compare with the Lith results.
The course costs R1000, and this includes tuition, chemistry, printing equipment and toners. Students are expected to provide their own photographic paper.
The course is to be run over four 4 hour sessions over two weeks.

As part of the National Skills Development Strategy, Market Photography Workshop and Create SA are offering 15 bursaries towards an 18-month Photography Learnership (NQF 5)
The learnership will cover various aspects of photography, including: visual literacy, technical, contextual studies, history, and enterprise, in analogue and digital photography.

The international residency programme Akademie Schloss Solitude is once again inviting artists to live and work at Solitude for six or twelve months. Vacancy for position of Editor-in-chief
We are looking for a suitable candidate to fill the position of Editor-in-chief. This is a senior position that requires the incumbent to manage the entire workings of the site. The position is NOT a full-time position and would suit an individual, or collective of individuals, with project management experience in the visual arts and/ or on-line publishing field.
The general duties of the incumbent editor are as follows:
To define an editorial direction for the website over a six month period;
To implement this policy in conjunction with the website's existing regional editors and other contributing editors;
To set monthly submission deadlines and follow up in-house and freelance contributions as well as handle ad hoc queries relating to the site;
To screen all content submissions before passing these on the sub-editor;
To write the opening page editorial statement;
To report activities to editorial board, at defined intervals; and
To promote the site to the media and subscriber database.
ArtThrob is an independently managed visual arts interest website with an average of 80,000 original page impressions per month, with an equal split between local and international readership. The site has over 1200 subscribers on its database. The position of Editor-in-chief requires a high degree of diligence, consummate editing and writing skills and the ability to work independently. The position will be remunerated commensurate with the skills of the successful applicant.

Community Arts Project still has some spaces available on their full time Performing and Visual Arts courses for 2004. We offer programmes in the fields of Art, Craft and Design and Performing Arts.
The Foundation Programme is a full-time programme running from Monday to Friday for matriculated students with little or no formal arts training. This introduces concepts and techniques in a variety of areas within the performing and visual arts and is a bridging year for learners who wish to continue with more specialised studies at a university or technikon, or who seek employment in the arts sector.
The Professional Development Programme is a flexible full-time programme for students who have completed the CAP Foundation Programme, or who have equivalent training and experience. Here they develop skills through independent project work in a particular area of the performing or visual arts and learners are linked directly to income-generating and general career development opportunities.

Call for Proposals: Negotiate at the Johannesburg Art Gallery
The Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) is calling for proposals from artists/ art groups /collaborations/ musicians/ performers/ cultural theorists and critics for 'Negotiate',
a series of four exhibitions, from August - November 2004, in response to South Africa's 10 Years of Democracy Celebration.
Facilitated by aThirdparty, the project will explore the process of 'negotiation' as integral to
democratic principles, as well as a necessary tool within the context of the JAG. It is to span a four-month period, and focus on the production of younger artists from around the country. The project comprises the following four distinct, but related, exhibitions:
August 7, 2004
Intercession - 1) The act of interceding esp. by prayer.
2) An instance of this, esp. a prayer on behalf of another.
September 4, 2004
Intervention - 1) The act or an instance of intervening.
2) Interference, esp. by the state in another's affairs.
3) Mediation.
October 2, 2004
Arbitration - The settlement of a dispute by an arbitrator.
November 6, 2004
Conciliation - 1) To make calm and amenable; pacify.
2) The use of conciliating measures; reconcilement.
The project will require artists to participate, either in one or more of the four exhibitions, or undertake a project spanning the full four months.
Requirements:
- Participants must be between the ages of 20 and 35
- Proposals should not be more than two pages in length
- A brief CV must be attached, as well as examples of previous works wherever possible.
- The project must engage with the surrounding communities as well as the JAG.
- Artists therefore need to consider their work as functioning both within the gallery, and in the surrounding area.
- Artists have artistic licence in the interpretation of the themes.
- We are in the process of negotiating designated exhibition space, however artists are encouraged to work within and around the existing exhibitions in the gallery, and with the permanent collection housed in the gallery. From this point of origin, artists are encouraged to expand their production into the larger contextual environment of the JAG, Joubert Park
and its immediate surrounds.
- As we would like to make this project as collaborative and cross-disciplinary as possible we encourage discussion between the artists as well as with us (the facilitators). Proposals
need not be final and are open to discussion. Please send through preliminary ideas with this in mind.
- Decisions will be based on the strength of each proposal/ concept and relevance to the project.
Final dates for submissions:
July 2, for the first exhibition, opening August 7, as well as projects spanning the four months.
August 2 for submissions for the second exhibition, opening September 4.
August 30 for submissions for the third exhibition, opening October 2.
September 27 for submissions for the fourth exhibition, opening November 6.

(Image)ining Resistance: Call for papers
We are seeking contributions for a collection of essays tentatively entitled '(Image)ining Resistance'. Our aim is to encourage interdisciplinary approaches and critical examinations that address the use of visual imagery in social and activist movements throughout history. From banners embroidered for suffragette actions, to the impact of photographs taken in Soweto in 1976, to political puppets created for recent global justice demonstrations, the intersections between visual culture and activism relate a rich history with transnational and trans-ideological import. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged, as are essays addressing a wide range of historical periods, geographic regions and protest actions.
Topics might include, but are not limited to:
- the image as a tool of persuasion
- the image as a site of resistance
- "activist" art
- anarchist art
- media coverage of protests and demonstrations
- protest as performance
- culture jamming
- historical analyses of art and protest

Annual National Youth Festival Art Competition at the DIT
Gallery
Once again the Durban Institute of Technology (DIT) gallery invites young people to submit their entries for National Creative Arts Youth Festival Visual Arts Competition, which celebrates 15 years of existence. The Aim of the competition is to stimulate creativity amongst young people from grade 0 to post- matric to display their works of art in an art gallery, and awards cash prizes to encourage the pursuit of artistic endeavors.
The competition is open to all people under the age of 21 on January 1, 2004 whether at school level, in tertiary institution and/ or working independently.
Artworks in any media are accepted. A panel of judges will select these and prizes will be awarded as a stipulated in the entry forms.

gallery (Bulwer Rd) and at the DIT Gallery (Mansfield rd.). Electronic entry
forms are also available on request. Also entry forms may be photocopied,

Iraq - the war and the period afterwards, and is looking for proposals of net-based art works, papers, articles, comments, links etc which fit in this spectrum.

Art at War - The Artist's Voice
The Aldo Castillo Gallery will present an exhibition to provide a forum for
all artists (established and emerging) to express their views on the current
acts of war and war in general.
The gallery's social mission is to increase awareness of the significant
cultural contributions of international artists and Latin American artists
in particular, through exhibitions, educational programmes and live
performances. Any "theatre" of war is so inconsistent with our overall
mission that we feel compelled to encourage artists to express their
individual perspectives as a means to further dialogue and present the
multitude of opinions that surround this subject (it seems ironic that the
current Iraq war is taking place in Mesopotamia, where one of the world's
first civilisations and important cultures was located).
"War represents a significant regression from our potential state of grace
with "God" and a deviation from humanity's original purpose, towards the
purpose of "Evil". War is characterised by suffering, oppression, poverty,
vanity, and disappointment, in pursuit of the false gods of money, power,
racial or national dominance, and any other partisan, political cause. And
all of this is expressed as pride and egotism, both forms of ignorance, by
which a person falsely positions himself over others".

SASOL New Signatures Competition
Promoting, supporting and exposing the work of emerging artists of South Africa to the public is the drive behind the Sasol New Signatures Competition 2004. This important annual competition presented by the Association of Arts Pretoria and sponsored by SASOL is open to all artists who are older than 18 years.
Many previous winners have gone on to become highly regarded South African and international artists building an ongoing vital and dynamic foundation to the visual arts in our country.

Call for entries to Mongolia's first international exhibition
'FEEL FELT' is the first international art exhibition after the democratisation of Mongolia, in 1990. The vent is being organised by Mongolian Committee and the STOFFWECHSEL Institute. The event aims to draw Mongolia in to the international cultural circuit, and is offering 50 artists from 24 countries an opportunity to participate.
The event will take place in the city of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The artworks will be shown in selected locations across the city, including public places. All the artworks will be realised on site in Mongolia with Mongolian artists and intellectuals. The artists will arrive to Mongolia three weeks before the Vernisage to finish their installations and artworks. The organisers have committed to give assistance and know how to the invited artists. In addition, Mongolian artists, designers, architectures and other professions will assist them. The invited artists will have access to workshops in Ulaanbaatar.

UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme
In the early sixties the Swedish philanthropist couple Aschberg donated a mansion located in Ile-de-France to UNESCO. In the memory of the patrons and in conformity with the spirit of their donation, the mansion was sold in 1992 and UNESCO decided to allocate the totality of the interests perceived from the capital of the sale to the creation of the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists.
The UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists program was created in 1994 to open new career prospects to young artists and give them opportunities to continue their training in specialised institutions.
Since its creation, the number of fellowships granted and applications received regularly increase. Hundreds of young artists have already benefited from the program. For 2004/2005, the program proposes 57 fellowships offered by 48 partner institutions from 27 countries.
These fellowships are co-financed by the Fund for the Promotion of Culture (IFPC) and an international network of partner institutions specialised in the training of artists. IFPC was created in November 1974 during the 18th session of UNESCO General Conference. The original objective was to create a development bank designed to help cultural management turned into a financial fund to support cultural projects. Today The Fund's mission consists in offering complementary funds to artists' and entrepreneurs' projects so that cultural diversity could profit from globalisation instead of being its victim.

2004 Commonwealth Photographic Awards
The 6th annual Commonwealth Photographic Awards, organised by the Commonwealth Press Union in collaboration with the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, is an open competition for amateur and professional photographers. A special category has been created this year for Under 18's.

AVA invites submissions
The Association For Visual Arts (AVA) in Cape Town invites submissions from visual artists who wish to exhibit at AVA from 2004 onwards. The Selection Committee of the AVA meets every two months to review submissions and the next meeting takes place on Wednesday, November 19. Selection meetings take place every second month thereafter.
Interested artists should bring to the gallery six to eight works (these can be supplemented by visual material such as slides and photographs), a CV and a short letter of intent or an artist's statement. The committee is most interested in reviewing the work that the artists wish to exhibit or else their most recent works. Artists can collect their works the day after the meeting.
In addition, any curators wishing to curate exhibitions for AVA should submit proposals to AVA's Selection Committee.

ArtSPACE Durban calls for exhibition proposals for 2004
ArtSPACE Durban (aSd) is looking for artists to submit proposals for exhibiting work in 2004. Contemporary work, including installations and new media with a focus on challenging embedded perceptions, is encouraged.
aSd is housed in a warehouse just off Umgeni Road in Durban in a suitably gritty industrial environment with a view of the sea. The space is robust and calls for interaction. Exhibition rentals are reasonable as the Main Gallery is R280 per week (180 sq. meters), the Middle Gallery R140 per week (50 sq. meters) and the Coffee Lounge R 60 per week (48 sq. meters). ASd can also take care of invitations (per 1000 (A6) R 550) whilst postage is R1.80 per invite.

My Mission: call for submissions
'{self}_representation 2003', the new show on Le Musee di-visioniste curated by Agricola de Cologne and launched on September 30 2003, invites artists to submit to the recently initiated project 'My Mission', a collection of textual self-representations in form of artistic statements.

Situated on Lower Main Road, Woodstock, the old Bijou is home to the Blacksmith Forge, and was previously Public Eye and Odd Enjinears headquarters as well as The Curve bar. This large Deco building was formerly a cinema and has many separate and linked spaces. Girls Night Out looking for sponsorship
'Girls Night Out' is a thematic group show of invited artists to be held as part of the third Month of Photography festival, February 15 - March 20, 2005 at the João Ferreira Gallery, Cape Town.
Curators Tracy Lindner Gander and Geeta Chagan, are looking for like-minded businesses/ individuals to sponsor the event. Finances are required to cover artwork production costs, venue rental, and the creation and production of marketing material, which includes exhibition invitations and a catalogue.
The aim of the show is to promote an awareness of the wide range of artists/ photographic styles employed by artists living in South Africa - to break with the largely male-oriented view of contemporary South African life as expressed through traditional photographic practice. To this end, both emerging and established artists have been invited to participate in the exhibition.
