Ed Young selected for Bonami's and Christov-Bakargiev's 'The Pantagruel Syndrome'
Cape Town artist Ed Young, a recent Masters graduate, and known for staging such conceptual performances as the auction of Bruce Gordon, has been invited to participate on the upcoming T - Torinotriennale tremusei, a new exhibition of contemporary art which will be held every three years in Turin, organized in conjunction by the Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, the GAM Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo.
The first edition, T1, is due to open on November 9, 2005, and will run through February 28, 2006. This exhibition, 'The Pantagruel Syndrome', is co-curated by Francesco Bonami and Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and will comprise the work of 75 artists from round the world, as well as two homage solo exhibitions to mid-career artists who are particularly relevant today.
Writes Christov-Bakargiev, 'Pantagruel is a grotesque, almost absurd character created by French author François Rabelais (1484-1553). A creature of gigantic proportions, and with a voracious appetite, always traveling adventurously, Pantagruel represents the passage from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance as an empirical endeavor. In some ways, Pantagruel is a contemporary figure, representing the gigantic impulses, yet the fragility of today's globalized society.'
