CAPE REVIEWS

[03.02.06] Umsi at the the AVA
The Vuyile Voyiya-curated show 'Umsi' finds a diverse range of artists addressing the persistent issue of fires in informal settlements around Cape Town. Through its unusual process of conception and curatorial involvment, the exhibition largely avoids the pitfalls of an issue-driven group show. Linda Stupart reviews.

[03.02.06] Synergy at The Old Townhouse
Synergy comprises a series of works conceived and designed by artists and realised by workshops Qalo and The Mogalakwena Craft Art Foundation run by Elbe Coetsee. Linda Stupart reviews, casting a critical glance at the problematics of this relationship while admiring some the outcomes on show here.

[03.02.06] Deborah Poynton at Michael Stevenson
Lloyd Pollack is overwhelmed by the scale, detail and breadth of Deborah Poynton's 'Safety and Security' at Michael Stevenson Contemporary. Her allegorical works, he points out, never impose a definitive solution.

GAUTENG REVIEWS

[03.02.06] Lisa Brice at the Goodman Gallery
Lisa Brice's first show in South Africa for five years reveals a change in strategy from the artist who came to prominence both here and abroad in the mid-90s. 'Night Vision' features a series of paintings in which 'are as ghostly as they are personal'. Michael Smith is sold.

KZN REVIEWS

[03.02.06] KZNSA Members' Exhibition at the KZNSA
The Annual KZNSA Members' exhibition finds the usual mixed bag of goodies, with works by hobbyists hanging alongside those by well established figures on the art scene. Francesca Verga reviews.
