Phansi Museum opened

The Phansi Museum, situated in Roberts House, a Victorian historical monument in Durban, officially opened its doors to the public on August 17. The name 'Phansi' means beneath or downstairs in isiZulu.
TheMuseum houses a private collection of Southern African Tribal artifacts including beadwork (dating from the 19th century to the present) from different regions of KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Ndebele areas. Examples of headrests, meat-platters, carved spoons and a collection of Zulu clay pots as well as traditional earplugs, snuff bottles, snuff spoons, pipes, fertility dolls carved sticks are amongst the museum's exhibits. There is also a contemporary collection of telephone wire baskets and modern sculptures.
Works are part of architect Paul Mikula's private collection. The display intends to highlight the significance and historical value of such collections. The museum is managed by Mikula's son Max and guided tours of the collection are officiated by host Pumzile Nkosi.
