Sasol New Signatures winners announced
The 2006 Sasol New Signatures winners were announced this month at an event in Pretoria. The terminally chirpy Peter Ndoro of SABC Africa fame MC'ed the event, which was held at the Pretoria Art Museum. Sasol Chief Executive Pat Davies was on hand to congratulate the prize winners.
The overall prize of R60 000 was won by young Pretoria artist Cillie Malan, for his animated work on DVD Motsebetsi ya Motsho 'Black Labour' (Supa Market). The work, which is reminiscent of William Kentridge's seminal short animation Mine, deals with the fraught nature of division of labour along racial lines.
Runners up Gina Kraft and Rat Western each walked away with R15 000. Kraft's untitled performance/projection work deals with issues around the body, presence and gender. Western's untitled video installation piece takes an intimate, often voyeuristic look at the people and spaces that constitute inner city Johannesburg. Merit awards of R5 000 each were made to Angeline-Ann le Roux, and Olaf Bisschoff with Jean Marais. Regional selections were made by numerous judges, and the final selection committee comprised Franji Cronje, Lucia Burger, Teresa Lizamore, Gordon Froud, Nicholas Hlobo and Jo Ractliffe.
