Wax Award semi finalists announced
The 10 semi-finalises in the 2007 Sasol Wax Art Award were announced in Johannesburg this month. Selections are made from an open call for submissions of recent work by established artists, and this year, over 150 entries from around the country were received.
The award requires the semi finalists to put forward a proposal for a new art piece which can be in any medium, but must include wax as either a material or a theme. From the 10 proposals, five will be accepted, and those semi-finalists will each receive R20 000 to make the proposed piece. These five works will go on show at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in August. The winner walks away with a prize of R130 000, a prize won last year by Jeremy Wafer with a wax floor drawing and a video.
The 2007 judging panel is chaired by Moleleki Frank Ledimo of VANSA, with Gordon Froud of the University of Johannesburg, Avi Sooful of the Vaal University of Technology and Nathi Gumede of the KZNSA. For the next round of judging, they will be joined by Penny Siopis of Wits School of the Arts and arts consultant Lucia Burger.
The semi-finalists are: Wayne Barker, Lien Botha, Mbongeni Buthelezi, Keith Dietrich, Noria Mbasa,, Avashone Mainganye,, Walter Oltmann, Andrew Verster and Sue Williamson.
