The Artist's Way and The Sound of Paper workshops
Two new art courses are on offer in Durban this month. They are both based on the well known books by Julia Cameron - The Artist's Way and The Sound of Paper. The The Artist's Way aims to put people in touch with their own creativity through a 12 week programme which requires a daily commitment of only half an hour where the participant learns to give up ideas of perfection and change focus from product to process. The main tools are the 'morning pages' and the 'artist dates' which are daily exercises which include writing and solitary time. It claims to provide people with an awareness about their own behaviours based on discovering spiritual values.
The book sold over 2 000 000 copies worldwide and has achieved something of a cult status. The writer is an American playwright, poet and filmmaker and author of more than 24 books who lives and works in New York. The books have been used as source material for courses in all parts of the world from New York to the jungles of Panama. The local course will be led by Bernice Stott and Sarah Olds. Stott is a professional speaker, trainer, artist and experienced counsellor whose qualifications include theology, drama, art and Lifeline training. She has a Master's Degree in Fine Arts and an Honour's Degree in Drama and Performance Studies. Sarah Olds is a social worker in private practice who also practices painting, poetry and prose. The course runs for 8 weeks from February 1 - March 29, 2007.
A second course, also based on Cameron's teachings, is The Sound of Paper, a course enabling one to discover the strength and courage to create. The experience is one of group and individual work and runs on Thursday evenings from January 18 - February 22. There is also a weekend course at a country retreat called King's Grant in Ixopo in March.
