Durban gallery expands to Berlin
by Carol Brown

Karen Bradtke of artSPACE durban has built a reputation for promoting new artists in her warehouse space in Durban's industrial area of Umgeni Road. As readers of ArtThrob will know, she runs a regular programme of exhibitions which are often experimental in nature and avoid the trap of commercialism. Her latest show is 'Off The Wall 2' featuring well known cartoonists and artists such as Zapiro, Rico, Themba Siwela, Wesley van Eeden, Jason Bronkhorst, Ewok, Alastair Findlay, Ben Hodson, Tyron Love , N.D.Mazin, Jeff Rankin, Andrew Mogridge, Mogorosi Motshumi, Jeremy Nel, Mike Scott, Wild Beast, Luke Molver, Leonora van Staden, Senyol, Scott Siveright, Ross Turpin, Adelle O'Connell, Thabani Gumede, Andrew Schnetler, Alastair Laird, and Unknown Graf Writers

Bradtke recently graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the Durban University of Technology as a mature student, and took the brave leap of opening the artSPACE gallery. She has now gone one step further in a move to promote South African (and especially KZN) artists in Europe. What could be a more exciting city to do this in than Berlin?

artSPACE berlin, which consists of 4 separate spaces, is located in the Mitte area, which is the hub of the city. The main aim of the gallery is to show work by artists who are connected to Africa in some way.

The first exhibition, opening on June 14, is a group show called 'A4 from Durban' featuring prints on A4 paper by artists who are all currently residing in and around Durban. These are: Barry Truter, Ezequiel Mabote, Isaac Sithole, Malibongwe Shangase, Khanyisile Busi Zulu, Gabisile Nkosi and Kristin Hua Yang. The exhibition's title is intended to not only bind the prints together thematically, but to also refer to the first link between artSPACE durban and artSPACE berlin, like an imaginary A4 highway. Bradtke extends an invitation to ArtThrob readers living in Berlin to come and join her at the opening.

This is a great opportunity for local artists and we look forward to the journey along this new road. We will keep readers updated regularly.
