Africa's first Photomarathon takes place in downtown Jozi

The first African photomarathon was held in Johannesburg on Saturday February 24, the result of a collaboration between PhotographySA.com and the Bag Factory's About Art programme. This event was characterised by its duration, running from 8am to 8pm. Participants were expected to produce series of photographs on a range of predetermined themes, of which they were informed once every four hours.

The decision to host the event was made to put the spotlight on the city's unique dynamics and vibrancy, and also to harness the creativity of Jozi's large number of active photographers. The event organisers hope to use the photomarathon (and its subsequent panel discussion and exhibition on the March 3 and 15 respectively) to correct a perceived lack of opportunities for the profiling of these artists and their work.

During the event, participants were given four new themes every four hours at different venues, effectively moving them around downtown Johannesburg. At the end of the event, photographers sumitted a single photograph on each theme.

In the week that follows the photomarathon, a panel discussion took place, pooling the input of a variety of prominent photographers. A professional jury will also decide on winning series and winning individual photographs from the photomarathon. These winners will be announced at the opening of the exhibition, which is to be held at the Bag Factory on March 15.

Said Bronwyn Lace, education officer of About Art, before the event, 'This is an enormous opportunity for both up-and-coming and established photographers to compete in a singular event in downtown Jo'burg'.
