Art for Humanity: Break the Silence HIV/Aids Banners
by Jan Jordaan
The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has displayed three of the artworks from the Break the Silence HIV/AIDS portfolio on the walls facing residential and commercial area Glenwood in Durban during March 2007. This initiative by DUT commenced on Human Rights Day (March 21) as celebrated throughout South Africa and forms part of the DUT stated commitment to being an institution that promotes social responsibility relevant to the wider community.
Although the brief to the participating artists in the 'Break the Silence' portfolio included creating greater awareness of the Aids pandemic in South Africa as well as addressing issues regarding the stigma often associated with being HIV positive, its importance also lies in the values associated with good art. By this public display of art, its efficacy in addressing social issues can be communicated to a wide public.
