Massachusetts Institute of Technology invites applications for Visual Arts Program
The MIT Visual Arts Program (VAP) seeks committed, curious and creative students for the 2009-2010 academic year. This selective two-year programme grants successful participants a Master of Science in Visual Studies (SMVisS) degree. Positioned within the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, the VAP offers a wealth of exploration and research opportunities in trans-disciplinary relationships with programmes and labs in the MIT community.
The Programme
The MIT Visual Arts Program operates as a critical production- and education-based laboratory within the context of an advanced technological community. The programme explores the role of art in society and considers artistic practice as knowledge production, thus promoting an approach that challenges traditional genres and the limits of the gallery/museum context. Studio investigations and artistic research are realised through performance, sound and video, photography, interrogative design, as well as through experimental media and new genres.
The programme also emphasizes art that engages public spheres, the production of space, networked cultures, and questions relating to the environment, gender, and social stratification. Students are encouraged to work individually or collectively to develop their own vision of artistic practice. Extra-curricular activities include a cross-disciplinary lecture series, field trips, workshops, studio visits and public presentations.
VAP Faculty
Instructors are world-renowned, with active, international careers and a strong interest in cross-disciplinary debate, research, and modes of production. VAP Director and Associate Professor Ute Meta Bauer directed SITAC VI 2008 in Mexico City, co-curated Documenta 11 and was Artistic Director of the 3rd Berlin Biennial. Professor Joan Jonas participated in this year's Biennales in Sidney and São Paulo, and the Yokohama Triennale. VAP Professor Krzysztof Wodiczko is the Director of MIT's Center for Advanced Visual Studies. In 2008 he completed a major public projection for the city of Warsaw to commemorate the 1968 student uprising, and the War Veteran Projection Vehicle for the city of Denver, during the Democratic National Convention.
Newly appointed Associate Professor Gediminas Urbonas and his partner Nomeda Urbonas were awarded Honorable Mention for the Lithuanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2007. Visiting Professor Antoni Muntadas represented Spain at the Venice Biennale 2005. Lecturers Andrea Frank (Photography), Amber Frid-Jimenez (Participatory Media), Joe Gibbons (Video), Wendy Jacob (Autism Studio), Jae Rhim Lee (Environmental Studies), and Joe Zane (Mixed Media) are prominent practitioners in their fields.

LACDA 2008 International Juried competition
Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (LACDA) announces our juried competition for digital art and photography. Our competitions are very open-ended in terms of concept and approach, choosing not to impose limits on the artists. Rather, we encourage a broad range of technological creativity. Many top level academics, many self-taught 'outsiders,' some persons of great celebrity, many entirely unknown are exhibited - we are radically inclusive and all are welcome. Our only caveat is that the work must involve digital processes of some kind. That one requirement instantly narrows things down to a very identifiable realm of activity, in which we have sought expertise and for which we are a formidable advocate. This open approach is informed by our many years of experience in that regard.
Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work. All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable. The competition is international, open to all geographic locations. The selected winner recieves 10 prints up to 44 x 60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper (approximately a $1500 - $2000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery from January 8 - 31, 2009. The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.
Second place prizes: Five second place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24 x 36 inches ($150 - $200 in value) to be included in upcoming group shows. Second place winners will be scheduled into group shows within 12 months of announcement of winners. Consideration is given to placing these works in shows appropriate to their style, genre and/or content. These shows will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artists. Special consideration will be given to all entrants for inclusion in future shows at LACDA. Many entrants from past competitions have already been included in our exhibitions.
Deadline for entries: December 15, 2008
Winners announced: December 22, 2008
Exhibition dates: January 8 - 31, 2009
Registration fee is $30US (three images). Multiple entries permitted, additional $30 entry fee for each three images.

'Walk of Art' Festival 2009 invites participants
The Walk of Art Festival brings the artists to the art lovers and other members of the greater Cape Town area. Exhibitors and visitors together celebrate the creative spirit of the city. We are looking for artists (painters, sculptors, photographers, new media) and related industries to participate in what is likely to be the largest open air art event in Cape Town.
On February 28 and March 1, a wide range of artists will showcase their work. Visitors will be enlisted through an extensive media campaign and viral marketing campaign to ensure established art lovers attend as well as introducing newcomers to the pleasure of art. We aim to attract 5 000 people to the festival over two days.
Although this event falls outside of the Oranjekloof CID official boundaries, we have already enjoyed input, advice and support from them. We welcome more of this kind of interaction from enterprises that share the vision of this festival.VEO Gallery is one of our stakeholders and we have enjoyed very constructive input from them. Hopefully this synergy can take us far into the future.
Sponsorship opportunities exist for a brand to align with Walk of Art and receive reciprocal value through the marketing of their services and products and receiving exposure from the extensive media campaign.
Every R10 entrance fee that is collected at the gate will be donated directly to a not for profit organisation. The Park itself is in great need of support from the community to compliment the work that is done by Friends of De Waal Park.

SOUTH calls for entries
SOUTH seeks to uncover the finest examples of South African creativity across a broad spectrum of disciplines and forms. And, for the first time on one platform, showcase a dazzling array of our finest creative produce.
ART. ARCHITECTURE. ADVERTISING. CRAFT. DESIGN. FASHION. FILM&VIDEO. JEWELLERY. MUSIC. NEW MEDIA. PERFORMANCE ART. PHOTOGRAPHY.
A celebration of the gloriously positive, idiosyncratically naïve, ridiculously sardonic, richly contradictory, relentlessly spontaneous creative imagination inherent in our (don't cry now) beloved country. SOUTH seeks to encapsulate the bold, lawless, cheeky, crossover, politically incorrect flavour of our South African creative psyche.
THIS WAY UP
Because SOUTH is the new north, a complete turnaround of the planet stereotype, there is nothing finite or predictable about what we are looking for.
Where the north may exhibit an ordered sense of detached coolness, SOUTH is a thundering stampede of chaos and heat.
A happy accident of third and first worlds.
A vibe. A jol.
A state of mind.
Embracing contradiction and collision.
That iconic crossroad: where earthy Afrika meets contemporary design.
The kind of creative excellence that will best influence the judges is neither black nor white, nor ethnic, nor neutral, nor euro, nor west, nor east. It's a harmony out of contradiction. A balance of extremes. That fine line between order and chaos. SOUTH seeks executions that capture the soul of this mystique.
THE TONE
Gloriously positive, ridiculously naïve, relentlessly spontaneous. Bold, lawless, cheeky, crossover, politically incorrect. About finding a home for sacred cows - the braaivleis. About changing the world by Making A Difference.
THE PROOF
Hoezit pap and sushi. Sawubona high class elephant dung ashtrays. Viva our rather shweeet giant plastic chicken installation.
SOUTH LEGENDS POINT THE WAY
If that fusion crossover is about to become a blur, look no further than our most distinctive footprint, our past and current legends, the SOUTH Hall of Fame.
SOUTH is presented by the Creative Alliance, which is Design Indaba, The Loeries and Creative Circle.

Specs journal invites submissions
Specs is a journal of contemporary culture and arts at Rollins College that aims to create sympathetic interfaces between artistic and critical practices. The editors invite submissions of creative and/or critical work for the annual Fall 2008 print and web issue. We seek works of fiction, non-fiction, cultural criticism, artwork, poetry, and pieces that blur genre boundaries.
The editorial board consists of writers and academics from various fields. The editors are excited by specialty, an excess of detail, fragments, narratives, meta-narratives, and more.
The deadline for poetry, creative non-fiction, fiction, and art is March 3, 2008. We accept simultaneous submissions of creative work, as long as we receive prompt notice of acceptance elsewhere. Please limit prose submissions to under 6000 words and poetry submissions to 10-12 pages.
Email submissions as word attachments to editors@specsjournal.org
Remember to include a brief cover letter indicating whether you wish to be considered for the print edition, the web edition, or both. Please be advised that colour artwork with heavy graphics will only be considered for the web edition. Artwork for the print edition is limited to black on white work (4 x 7 dimensions).
Please also indicate the type/genre of submission in the subject heading (Poetry, Fiction, etc.).
We are also seeking art, fiction, poetry, and critical work that limits itself to one-page pieces for ONE/OFF, a special interactive section of Specs. In this section, we hope to force interactions between the print and web edition.
