Johann van der Schijff brings home two prizes from Dak'Art 2008

Johann van der Schijff was invited to take part in the International Exhibition of Dak'Art 2008, the 8th Biennale of Contemporary African Art, in Dakar, Senegal, from 9th of May until 9th of June 2008. He was flown to Dakar to join five other South African artists, artists chosen from 17 African countries and the diaspora, art collectors, curators and media from May 8 -14, 2008 for a celebration of African art.

During the opening ceremony on May 8, Johann was awarded two prizes, the European Union Award and the Zuloga Corporation Award. The European Union Award includes a cash prize and the promotion of van der Schijff's work and artistic career by the European Union. It will also involve an exhibition/workshop in Senegal in the near future. The Zuloga Corporation Award includes a cash prize and participation in an exhibition representing African Art in Beijing, China, July 15 until August 15, 2008, as part of the 2008 Olympic Games.

Johann van der Schijff is a senior lecturer in new media at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town.
