Moving on up: Johannesburg's Artspace shifts location to Rosebank
by Michael Smith
In March, Johannesburg's Artspace Gallery, owned and run by Teresa Lizamore, traded its sleepy suburban setting for the bustle of Rosebank. Planting itself in Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, among a host of other contemporary art galleries, the gallery is now the proud inhabitant of some very swish, new premises. The space, designed for Artspace by Jeremy Rose of Mashabane Rose Architects, is a hot contender for best looking Jo'burg gallery.
Lizamore has added the energies of Johann du Plessis, established artist and curator, to her burgeoning team. With three shows in quick succession ('Space Fusion', Fritha Langermann's 'Of Symmetries and Oxymorons' and 'Heptad: Seven Years of Artspace'), the venue is putting itself on the map.
ArtThrob went along to the opening of Artspace on March 5, where both Lizamore and Rose addressed the capacity crowd that spilled out onto the pavements. See images alongside.
