Subject: SA artists

Do you have any (bio or other) information about the Sibekos (Peter and Tshepo) and/or Billy Molokeng? Or the Makhubele beadworking family in the Northern Province? Do you by any chance know anything about the BAT Visual Arts Training Centre in Harare?

- Can anybody help Ms McDaniel?

The travel section of the M-Web site has a link to leisureplanet.com, where you can read travel guides on specific countries. 'Art and Culture' is a category included under 'Things to do' for South Africa. After a brief history of South African art, this site refers to Irma Stern, Pierneef, Sister Helen Vorster and of course, the bushmen, and comments that : "Not many of the more contemporary artists are of the same standard as those of the past ..." A bit is then said about township art, but everything else is dismissed.

I have mailed the editors of this site with my opinions on this, and wondered if you would be interested in doing the same.

I sent you a mail yesterday concerning the content of the Art and Culture section in the M-Web travel section. I have received the following reply and thought you might be interested to see it.

Dear Kate Williamson, many thanks for your mail about out section on South African art. We are sorry that we gave the impression that none of South Africa's contemporary artists are in the same league as Irma Stern. I heartily agree with your mail, but art appreciation is subjective and our writer is entitled to her opinion. I will make an amendment to this section as I agree with you that this statement is unfair. Thanks for the tip to link to ArtThrob, I will add this too.
