'FOCUS11: Contemporary Art Africa' - Art Basel

Jan-Henri Booyens, Mohau Modisakeng, Rowan Pybus, Graeme Williams and Ntando Cele at Focus 11

Conceived as a complement to Art Basel (June 15-19, 2011), FOCUS11 showcases galleries and art institutions and features a series of emerging and established artists in a show curated by Christine Eyene. Visitors can expect to see a wide variety of artwork from diverse scenes within the African continent and its Diaspora. The accompanying programme starts with a symposium this year and ranges from performances and artist talks to workshops and guided tours.

Symposium@FOCUS11 (11-12 June) presents two days of interdisciplinary discussions and interactions shortly before the opening of FOCUS11 . The symposium examines the critical role of live performance as an independent branch of performing arts. What roles do live performances play in today’s galleries, public and art spaces?

15 June - 19 June
