ABC, a project of Bridget Baker and Bianca Baldi, researches the dual character of the film image that encompasses both actuality and illusion. Through their ‘restagings’, ABC investigates the logic of illusion in cinema. 'ACT 1: ÆROLITHE ILLUSION' is ABC’s first publication, and is an extension of their film installation of the same name exhibited at GoetheonMain in Johannesburg in 2013.
The film installation makes reference to the autobiography of the American magician Carl Hertz, 'A Modern Mystery Merchant', in which Hertz records his first trip to South Africa in 1896. Hertz brought a cinematograph and 5 films to Johannesburg, projecting these alongside his levitation act, 'The ÆROLITHE ILLUSION', at the Empire Theatre of Varieties on the corner of Fox and Ferreira Streets. ABC uses film stills from the films Hertz projected as well as images of the magical act of levitation, imaginatively transmitting, through re-enactment, Hertz’s scenes of levitation and suspension.
