8th Bibliophilia Africana Conference

First Conference Circular and Call for Papers

Every country in Africa is currently faced with the challenges of book development, book pricing, preservation of books and oral literature, public libraries, accessibility of literature, reading literacy, and the impact of information technology on book development and on literature. The 8th Bibliophilia Africana conference will focus on these issues and how they are being addressed in various sectors and at various levels across the continent.

Day one of the three-day conference will focus on historical perspectives, day two on the present and day three on the future of the book in Africa.

Interested parties are invited to submit abstracts on the themes listed below. If your interest area is not listed below, please feel free to submit an abstract and it will be considered - but inclusion will be dependant on time constraints.

Paper presentations should last 20 minutes or you may make a Poster Presentation. We also envisage workshops, creative performances and exhibitions.

Philip L. Ravenhill Fellowship

As the founder of the West African Museums Programme (1982-87) and Chief Curator of the National Museum of African Art (1987-97), Philip L. Ravenhill was a major creative force in the study, collection, preservation, and exhibition of African art. The Philip L. Ravenhill Fellowship is awarded annually to an African art historian, cultural anthropologist, museum curator or visual artist. The Fellowship is intended to give deserving individuals the opportunity to travel, conduct research or practice their art in North American or European museums or educational institutions. Preference is given to young or mid-career scholars or artists who have not recently had the opportunity to travel internationally. Support may be requested for periods of one to three months, and applications will be funded up to US $7500. Successful applicants will have demonstrated accomplishment in research related to or practice of contemporary or traditional African arts. Fellowship recipients will be expected to deliver one lecture or give one critique and to make themselves available to staff, faculty and students at the host institution.

All applicants must be citizens of an African country, although not necessarily currently resident on the continent. The following materials must be included in support of the application:

1. Resumé or curriculum vitae
2. A description of no more than 1000 words clearly explaining the project to be undertaken and the expected outcome (e.g. monograph, chapter, article, exhibition)
3. An official letter written by the department head of the proposed host institution (museum, art school, college, or university) confirming approval of the applicant's proposed collaboration with that institution
4. Three letters of reference from professional employers, mentors, or colleagues
5. Projected dates of travel and length of residency
6. The name and address of a contact person at the proposed host institution
7. A detailed budget including travel expenses, living expenses, and supplies
8. Visual artists should submit 10 - 20 35mm slides of recent work (or digital equivalent)

Submissions invited for 2nd edition of Itch

Bell-Roberts Publishing launched its second magazine title, 'Itch', at the Design Indaba Expo on February 27, 2004. This self-styled 'ideas publication' aims to be 'as intellectually engaging as 'The New Yorker' and as desirable as 'Wallpaper'. 'Itch' casts its content as "an equal blend of excellent writing (think-pieces from academics and journalists and truly excellent creative work) and visual content from photographers, artists and designers."

Editing the title is 24 year old Mehita Iqani. The magazine is described by its publishers as stand-alone, unconventional and forward thinking, which will appeal to people who are "socially aware, upwardly mobile, brand exhausted, image and socio-globally conscious, ad-savvy, creative, trendy, choosy and generally intellectually under-stimulated by other mainstream magazines."

"'Itch' is about creating a media platform for contemporary writers, poets, designers, photographers, artists and visual thinkers that allows their ideas to be mainstreamed and consumed by a public tired of seeing the same old fluff in consumer magazines but who are still attracted to the glossy aesthetic," says Iqani, who has been working in media strategy since graduating from Wits in 2000. "'Itch' is about inviting readers to engage with new ideas, and offering advertisers the opportunity to communicate better with a market hungry for something different and meaningful. Itch is about ideas, and we hope to provoke as many as we offer in our pages."

'Itch' is published quarterly and has input from carefully selected consultants, including brand specialist David Cotton, Stellenbosch University academic and lecturer Daniel Roux and Prof Tawana Kupe, Head of Media Studies at Wits University along with a host of visual and literary contributors. 'Itch' was supported in part by a grant from the Swiss Arts Council, Pro Helvetia. Ekurhuleni Fine Arts Awards

The International Ekurhuleni Fine Arts Award will again be held in May and June 2004. This annual contemporary Fine Arts Award is regarded as one of the country's most prestigious awards. The prize money has been raised to a total of R40 000, with the winner taking R20 000 and R12 000, R8000 going to second and third places respectively.

Artists practicing in painting, sculpture, graphics, photography and any other fine art media may enter and the entry fee stands at R50 per work. Entry forms are available at the venue on the entry dates. Artists wishing to exhibit installations are advised to visit the facility to select a suitable position as space is limited and installations will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

This exhibition is unique in that it profiles the cultural focus of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality by attracting artists from around the country as well as internationally. This is the 16th year that the competition (formerly known as the Kempton Park Thembisa Fine Arts Award) will be held. The exhibition attracts established and emerging artists, and previous winners have found the support to pursue professional careers as artists. These include: Joanne Bloch, Daniel Mosako, Cobus Haupt, Klas Thibeletsha, Zondi Skosana, Keith Dietrich, Alan Crump, CJ Morkel, Brad Hammond and Jeannott Ladeira.

The adjudication panel comprises Jeremy Wafer, Colbert Mashile, Gordon Froud, Usha Seejarim and Joanne Bloch.

100 works will be selected from all the entries received and the winners will be announced on June 26.

Rules of Entry

1. Works of art may be entered during 26 - 28 May 2004 between 9am and 7pm. Entry forms will be provided at the venue on the above-mentioned days. An entry fee of R50 per artwork is payable upon entering the competition.

2. All artworks must be ready and suitable for exhibition. The work of art must have been completed in the 12 months prior to the competition.

3. Adjudication will take place on May 31 and June 1, 2004. Only the adjudicators will be allowed access. The adjudicators determine the right to set the standards of the competition. The adjudicators for 2004 are: Jeremy Wafer, Colbert Mashile, Gordon Froud, Usha Seejarim and Joanne Bloch.

4. Unselected Works must be collected on June 4 between 08:00 and 16:00 and on 5 & 6 June between 8am and 1pm. Organisers will not be responsible for unselected works of art that are not collected on the specified dates. Artists whose works are not selected for the exhibition will be notified telephonically.

5. The prize winners will be announced on June 26 at the opening of the exhibition at 6pm at the Coen Scholtz Recreation Centre. Prize winners will be notified telephonically that they must attend the opening function.

6. 100 art works will be selected by the adjudicators for an exhibition. The artists of these works will be notified that they must attend the opening function.

7. The exhibition may be viewed by the public free of charge from June 27 - July 15 from 10am - 5pm.

8. Art works that were selected for the exhibition and art works sold on the opening night may only be collected from 8am - 3pm from July 16 - 18, 2004. The organisers accept no responsibility for works of art not collected on these dates.

9. The following prizes will be awarded:
First Prize - R 20 000
Second Prize - R 12 000
Third Prize - R 8 000

10. Art works entered for the competition must be for sale and may not belong to anybody else. The purchase price of each work must be indicated on the entry form.

11. Any artist may participate in the competition and any number of art works may be entered. There is no limit on size, but the dimensions of the facility must be taken into account. The organisers reserve the right to select according to available space.

12. The decision of the adjudicators is final and no correspondence or verbal enquiries may be addressed to the organisers in this regard.

13. The first prize winner will be required to serve on the adjudicators' panel for the next Fine Arts Awards Competition.

14. There are no age categories and all media are admissible. Art works are judged on their merit.

UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme

Applications are invited for a Residency in Visual Arts at the Centro Colombo Americano (CCA), Medellín, Colombia (between 2 and 3 months).

Discipline: visual arts (drawing, installation, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, sculpture, rituals, mural projects, mixed media)

Host and partner institution: the CCA promotes international academic and cultural exchanges. The cultural programme includes cinema and the visual arts with exhibitions, film screenings and the interactive participation of visiting artists with the artistic community and the city at large.

Purpose of the residency: thanks to numerous lectures, workshops with local artists, forums and interactions with a diversity of institutions including the Afro Colombian community, the laureate will be at the heart of cultural exchanges. At the end of the residency, the CCA will organise an exhibition of his/ her work. Time will be divided between the artist's own work and sessions and activities planned by the CCA. The laureate may also participate in teacher education programmes.

Working/ living conditions: working space, participation in planned activities by the CCA and other institutions such as local universities and museums. Accommodation in a studio flat or single bedroom, both outside the institution with bathroom and full board.

Nature of bursary: return ticket, lodging, full board. Access to libraries and computers with Internet, AV/ Audio equipment supplied as needed, materials and supplies for the artist as required within reason. Local transportation in country will be covered by CCA. No allocation will be provided by the institution but health insurance will be covered.

Dates of residency: to be determined by mutual agreement between September 2004 and June 2005 (except between mid-December and January).

Eligibility: professional artists from Sub-Saharan Africa. Working knowledge of Spanish, English (preferred) or French required (one of the three).

Call for Applications for Skills Programme in Durban

Create SA, in partnership with Arts Training Consortium, is calling for applications for the skills programme in Cultural Entrepeneurship (NQF Level 4).

The programme is designed to help new or emerging entrepreneurs in the cultural industries to enhance their SMME skills. It aims to equip learners with the skills needed to market culture, work within a project team, interpret basic financial statements, write a business plan and write for a wide range of contexts. Credits towards the Certificate in Arts and Culture Administration Certificate are offered.

This programme will take place over three modules in Durban from April 19 - 24, June 24 - 30 and August 16 - 21. Learners have to attend all modules to gain credits.


  • Learners should be currently working in one of the following cultural sectors - performing arts, film and video production, craft, visual arts, heritage, music and design
  • A matric level (or equivalent) in reading, writing, speaking in English and mathematics is essential
  • Learners can be self-employed or formally employed, but must have at least 1 year's experience in the industry. Learners who are employed should have the full support and written permission of their employer to participate in all modules of the programme

  • A commitment to the learning process and to positive self-development is a pre-requisite.

Prospective Applicants should:
1. Submit an updated CV with at least one, preferably two, references and contact details
2. Write a one page (300 word) letter of motivation, demonstrating how these skills will be applied in their work environment. (If possible, this motivation should be typed or computer-generated)
3. Send a letter of support and commitment to all modules from the prospective learner's employer

SASOL New Signatures Competition

Promoting, supporting and exposing the work of emerging artists of South Africa to the public is the drive behind the Sasol New Signatures Competition 2004. This important annual competition presented by the Association of Arts Pretoria and sponsored by SASOL is open to all artists who are older than 18 years.

Many previous winners have gone on to become highly regarded South African and international artists building an ongoing vital and dynamic foundation to the visual arts in our country.

Being one of South Africa's most prestigious art competitions, it's a must to add to your 2004 calendar. The prestige of winning, exposure you will get as an artist, and the prize money on offer are sure to get your creativity going - so start working now and create works of art that will both stimulate and challenge.

The competition prize-giving takes place on Wednesday July 21 at the Pretoria Art Museum and an exhibition of selected works will be on display at the same venue until August 19.

Community Arts Project still has some spaces available on their full time Performing and Visual Arts courses for 2004. We offer programmes in the fields of Art, Craft and Design and Performing Arts.

The Foundation Programme is a full-time programme running from Monday to Friday for matriculated students with little or no formal arts training. This introduces concepts and techniques in a variety of areas within the performing and visual arts and is a bridging year for learners who wish to continue with more specialised studies at a university or technikon, or who seek employment in the arts sector.

The Professional Development Programme is a flexible full-time programme for students who have completed the CAP Foundation Programme, or who have equivalent training and experience. Here they develop skills through independent project work in a particular area of the performing or visual arts and learners are linked directly to income-generating and general career development opportunities.

I have studied photography for one year in London two years ago at London College of Printing and I am now in Cape Town looking for work in the photography business or alternatively in the film industry. Call for entries to Mongolia's first international exhibition

'FEEL FELT' is the first international art exhibition after the democratisation of Mongolia, in 1990. The vent is being organised by Mongolian Committee and the STOFFWECHSEL Institute. The event aims to draw Mongolia in to the international cultural circuit, and is offering 50 artists from 24 countries an opportunity to participate.

The event will take place in the city of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The artworks will be shown in selected locations across the city, including public places. All the artworks will be realised on site in Mongolia with Mongolian artists and intellectuals. The artists will arrive to Mongolia three weeks before the Vernisage to finish their installations and artworks. The organisers have committed to give assistance and know how to the invited artists. In addition, Mongolian artists, designers, architectures and other professions will assist them. The invited artists will have access to workshops in Ulaanbaatar.

UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme

In the early sixties the Swedish philanthropist couple Aschberg donated a mansion located in Ile-de-France to UNESCO. In the memory of the patrons and in conformity with the spirit of their donation, the mansion was sold in 1992 and UNESCO decided to allocate the totality of the interests perceived from the capital of the sale to the creation of the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists.

The UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists program was created in 1994 to open new career prospects to young artists and give them opportunities to continue their training in specialised institutions.

Since its creation, the number of fellowships granted and applications received regularly increase. Hundreds of young artists have already benefited from the program. For 2004/2005, the program proposes 57 fellowships offered by 48 partner institutions from 27 countries.

These fellowships are co-financed by the Fund for the Promotion of Culture (IFPC) and an international network of partner institutions specialised in the training of artists. IFPC was created in November 1974 during the 18th session of UNESCO General Conference. The original objective was to create a development bank designed to help cultural management turned into a financial fund to support cultural projects. Today The Fund's mission consists in offering complementary funds to artists' and entrepreneurs' projects so that cultural diversity could profit from globalisation instead of being its victim.

Call for applications for Thupelo Workshops

"Thupelo workshops are organised for artists by artists and are initiated in response to a need for interaction between themselves. 'The concentration of so much energy and commitment into a short period of time encourages risk-taking and experimentation that might not happen in the artist's own studio. At the same time the process of exchange that lies at the heart of the Workshops, based on the Triangle model, often has a long-term influence on the practice and sometimes the lives of the participants. The strong emphasis on process rather than product engendered by the workshops means that the work made and exhibited at the workshop open days is often not finished work." - Robert Loder.

We invite you to apply for the next regional workshop which will be held for ten days at Ulwazi School in Langa, in March 2004 (dates to be confirmed) culminating in an open day/ exhibition of work-in-progress on the final day. Sculpture Park Project: Oliewenhuis Art Museum

Oliewenhuis Art Museum is a satellite of the National Museum situated in Bloemfontein, the Free State. It is one of the youngest museums of its kind in the country and the only art museum in the province. The museum is situated in magnificent gardens overlooking the inner city making it an ideal site for a sculpture garden.

Oliewenhuis Art Museum has received funding from the National Lottery Board to launch and to co-ordinate a project whereby sculptors are invited to submit proposals for the execution and erection of sculptures to be permanently situated in the museum gardens. Artists are invited to submit proposals in drawing form, together with a budget, which will include envisaged materials, details of execution, instalment, transport and a timetable proposal.

Thereafter, selected artists will be invited to submit maquettes for a final selection of approximately 10 works. The sculpture garden seeks to broaden the parameters of art making so as to address new audiences and aims to involve artists from all over the country working in different media and styles.

AVA invites submissions

The Association For Visual Arts (AVA) in Cape Town invites submissions from visual artists who wish to exhibit at AVA from 2004 onwards. The Selection Committee of the AVA meets every two months to review submissions and the next meeting takes place on Wednesday, November 19. Selection meetings take place every second month thereafter.

Interested artists should bring to the gallery six to eight works (these can be supplemented by visual material such as slides and photographs), a CV and a short letter of intent or an artist's statement. The committee is most interested in reviewing the work that the artists wish to exhibit or else their most recent works. Artists can collect their works the day after the meeting.

In addition, any curators wishing to curate exhibitions for AVA should submit proposals to AVA's Selection Committee.

Call for Artists: 2004 Iowa Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary Miniature Prints

The Iowa Biennial Exhibition will exhibit an international survey of contemporary miniature prints in all 2-D media to be held beginning June 2004. There is no entry fee and up to three [3] works may be submitted.

ArtSPACE Durban calls for exhibition proposals for 2004

ArtSPACE Durban (aSd) is looking for artists to submit proposals for exhibiting work in 2004. Contemporary work, including installations and new media with a focus on challenging embedded perceptions, is encouraged.

aSd is housed in a warehouse just off Umgeni Road in Durban in a suitably gritty industrial environment with a view of the sea. The space is robust and calls for interaction. Exhibition rentals are reasonable as the Main Gallery is R280 per week (180 sq. meters), the Middle Gallery R140 per week (50 sq. meters) and the Coffee Lounge R 60 per week (48 sq. meters). ASd can also take care of invitations (per 1000 (A6) R 550) whilst postage is R1.80 per invite.

The running wall space of the various galleries is as follows:

Main Gallery: 33 meters @ 3.5 meters high
Middle Gallery: 18.4 m @ 3 m high
Coffee Lounge 15.2 m @ 3 m high
Total 66.6 m

25% commission is charged on works sold.

My Mission: call for submissions

'{self}_representation 2003', the new show on Le Musee di-visioniste curated by Agricola de Cologne and launched on September 30 2003, invites artists to submit to the recently initiated project 'My Mission', a collection of textual self-representations in form of artistic statements.

Please send your statement as a short text in plain email format (no more than 500 words), stating how you see your mission as an artist.

'My mission' is an ongoing project with an open end, so you can send your statement at any time, there is no deadline.

All serious entries will be immediately included.

The Association of Black Photographers invites proposals

Autograph Association of Black Photographers (ABP) is seeking proposals or expressions of interest from freelance photography curators to work closely with the organisation on developing, managing and delivering its programme of photography projects.

You will have a proven track record of curating and an established international network of artists and galleries. You must have an understanding of issues relating to representation, cultural diversity and human rights within photographic practice and be able to see a project through all stages of development including funding applications and evaluation. Excellent project management and negotiation skills are therefore essential.

TGD4 - International Workshop in Tambacounda
