The Cape Town Festival is calling for proposals from the arts and culture community in South Africa for the upcoming festival from March 16 to 24 2002.

The festival has developed from the Cape Town One City Festival, which had two successful events in September 1999 and 2000. The festival is being repositioned (and renamed) as a late summer event with an emphasis on contemporary original art in all media. The last event gathered over R7-million in media coverage and attracted well over 50 000 people to the city centre. The festival is an independent Section 21, not-for-profit company.

Self-funded projects and events taking place over the period of the festival around the city may be included, on application, in the festival if they fit the artistic policy (original contemporary works or works staged in a professional innovative manner - an artistic policy is available for perusal). All other events will be given space on the fringe (at present a page on our site) at a small cost. The festival is being positioned as a key southern hemisphere event with high quality professional productions by local and international artists and groups.

We are looking for projects in the following categories taking place over the festival period only (it may run longer before or after but has to fall within the dates March 16 to 24):

- Performance - dance, theatre or musical theatre
- Music
- Public Arts
- Street Performance
- Literature and poetry
- Visual Arts (2002 focuses on photography please contact the Centre for Photography for an application)
- Social dance (productions not demonstrations)

Proposals should include the following details:

- A description of the concept
- A motivation as to how the project/event/exhibition fits the thematic (for inclusion in the core programme)
- Date/s and venue/s planned or confirmed
- Details of the people involved in the project
- A budget and sources of finance

Applications without relevant information will not be considered.

Please note that the festival will not provide any finances for projects entered, but offers rather marketing and media support and the chance to be associated with a range of other projects of excellence. You will need to confirm the dates and your availability in writing and will be expected to sign a binding contract with the festival at least two months before the event. You will at that time have to prove to the festival that you have confirmed your budget and have secured your venues and key acts. You will be expected to abide by the marketing policy of the festival which is available on request.

Applications close on December 14

Decisions will be made by a set of peer committees set up by the festival, and final decisions rest with the artistic director. You will be informed of decisions no later than January 5 2002.

The Gibraltar Point Artist Residency Programme provides Canadian and international professional artists from all disciplines with a subsidised opportunity to live and work on Toronto Islands (Toronto, Canada) for one month. We are now accepting applications from professional artists of all disciplines for the term which will take place May 1 to 31 2002.

A new international painting award has been initiated in Florence under the auspices of the Caterina de Medici organisation with the city of Florence as official patron.

During a welcoming gala dinner in the presence of the Mayor of Florence on March 9 2002, all participants will be issued two canvas supports, prepared by the organising committee, on which they may complete their works. The artists will have five days at their disposal to complete their works, which must be handed in to the Awards Committee before the evening of March 13 2002. Many historic sights and areas not usually open to the public will be open to participants during this week. Following this, the works will be framed and exhibited in one of the historic buildings of Florence.

The exhibition will be open to the public on Friday March 15 with an additional "ex-tempore" competition held with all participating painters. The main exhibition will be judged by a panel of adjudicators while the "ex-tempore" exhibition will be judged by the public.

FNB Vita once again invites the public to make their nominations for the artist of their choice for the FNB Vita Art Prize 2002. The competition, culminating in an exhibition of the selected artists' works, aims to promote interest in and provoke debate around controversial, cutting-edge contemporary South African art.

This year's exhibition was held for the first time in Durban at the NSA Gallery and saw Moshekwa Langa emerge as the winner. It then had a second showing at the Market Theatre Gallery, giving art fans in Johannesburg the opportunity to engage with the commissioned works.

A panel of judges will review and consider all nominations and a short list of four artists will be drawn up. Each artist will be commissioned to produce a work for the FNB Vita Art Prize Exhibition to be held in 2002 at The Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg from July 13 to August 3. The overall winner will receive R35 000.

Members of the public are invited to nominate any artist countrywide, whose work has been exhibited in a recognised gallery between January and December 2001. 'Once Upon a Time There was a Giant Green Eland' is the title of a series of holiday writing and bookmaking workshops for children and young adults, to be held on December 10-13. The workshop are linked to an exhibition of contemporary San art and crafts at the Art on Paper gallery in Melville. Participants will have the opportunity to produce a book which they have written and illustrated themselves. Facilitators are skilled at exploring and stimulating creativity at all levels of skill and competence.

Calling all artists. You can reach a new audience through the Internet - and it won't cost you a cent. Artslink.co.za, the country's biggest and most comprehensive arts and culture website, has started a new service, the Arts Diary, parallelling their successful Show Guide, which lists all live performances around the country. The Show Guide is used extensively by the media and consulted by embassies and tour operators.

Just one click on Arts Diary and you can search the art world by artist, genre, province or when exhibitions are running. As search results display, there are links providing further information and background on, for example, the gallery hosting the exhibition or the artist. Categories of artistic creativity range from acrylic, airbrush, cartoons, ceramic, computer art, fine art, fabrics, geo art, graphic design, jewellery, multimedia, oils, pastels, photography, porcelain dolls and sculpture to watercolours.

Red Eye @rt is looking for young and up-and-coming artists to exhibit at the December Red Eye @rt.

December Red Eye @rt will take a slightly different approach to normal. Intended as a celebration of the end of 2001 it also signals the start of the New Year 2002 programme when Red Eye will happen quarterly instead of monthly. To initiate these changes the decision has been made to throw a bigger than ever Red Eye @rt event. Taking Red Eye @rt out of the Durban Art Gallery and into the Wheel Shopping Centre where The Wheel management has kindly lent the vacant space of what was the Hub. In this way Red Eye hopes to engage a new audience and open up new possibilities for creative engagement. In addition to the Hub itself there are several adjacent shops that can easily function as mini self-contained galleries providing lots of room for innovative installations, performance, etc.

December Red Eye @rt opens on Friday December 7.

We are living in a historical moment. The essence of life has changed. The world's psyche has been irrevocably altered. In this new era, Exit Art, as a cultural space near the World Trade Center, feels an obligation to interpret or translate the feelings of a larger community into a collective expression of analysis. They want to know how the events of September 11 have altered your behaviour - toward others, your city, your daily life - how the events changed your perception of reality and the world around you.

A change of behaviour is a change of culture, which is why Exit Art is organising a global project called REACTIONS. This project aims to be an international response from both inside and outside the art world, a reflection of how these events have changed your life.

Exit Art want to hear and share your reactions and are inviting you to participate in REACTIONS by submitting your response on a flat, 8-1/2 x 11" sheet of paper. Your submission can take the form of a letter, text, drawing, poem, painting, collage, photograph, or any other format that can fit on a piece of paper. REACTIONS will be an exhibition on view at Exit Art in New York City from January 12 - March 30 2002. All responses will be exhibited.

Your visual and poetic work will be put into a context of historical witness. Your effort will be valued; your voice will be heard.

Although at present AIDS is out of the news, the dramatic situation of new infections and infected people has not changed at all. The human tragedy continues worldwide. In order to create a Memorial for the Victims of AIDS to be published online on December 1, World AIDS Day, artists are invited to submit either one image (.jpg) or one text (email or .txt file) or one web-based work (URL or Flash .swf file/Quicktime .mov file) which has a subject connected to AIDS.

The deadline is December 1, but submissions are welcome during the whole of December and will be posted online immediately. On the occasion of World AIDS Day on 1 December, the 'Features of the Month December 2001' on www.a-virtual-memorial.org will be dedicated entirely to the victims of AIDS.

Hello everyone

There are people receiving this email all over the world. I have heard from some of you regarding the tragedy here in the US. I am writing to you because I have an idea for a way to use the internet to create a useful public archive.

I have been working on a project called 'Unofficial Communication'. I have received a grant from the University of Minnesota to research low or no-budget personal visual communications intended for a large audience. One way to think of these communications is as "private broadcasts". The goal is to document and contemplate the significance and meaning of non-commercial written and visual messages that individuals place in the public landscape. With the help of research assistants, I have been collecting images of graffiti, handmade flyers and stickers, personal "billboards", shrines and other markers, non-commissioned artworks, etc.

After the horrible events of this past week, people have used "unofficial communication" to write messages in ash on windows in lower Manhattan and make flyers to try to find missing loved ones. Here in the Twin Cities I have seen trees tied with huge red, white, and blue ribbons, stenciled signs adorned with flags placed in boulevards, and a huge banner with a message to President George Bush, among others.

I am asking your help in collecting more of these images. If you live in the Twin Cities, please email me the location of something that you saw and I can go and photograph it. If you are out of town or out of the country, you can send me a description of the artifact. If possible, it would be wonderful to get an image, digital or otherwise. You can email it to cgaiter@umn.edu. If you send something that has been published, please let me know the source.

One of my original motivations in pursuing this project is to show the persistence of the individual voice even in this time of hi-tech media concentration. As powerful as the news agency images of this past week are, there are many more images that have stories to tell but will only be seen on a small scale. I hope to document some of the essages that individuals took it upon themselves to create and place where others would see them.

At a time like this, it is easy for individuals to feel small and helpless. I see these signs and messages as assertions of personal power, indications that people do not give up, but use whatever tools they have to send messages to others. Regardless of the content of the messages (and I am interested in the full range of content) they are artifacts of this space in time. They will be temporary, and because of the urgency in collecting them before they disappear, I have taken the risk of imposing on you to help with this project. If you find this request inappropriate or intrusive, my sincere apologies.

After a year of planning and fundraising, we are once again proud to invite you to participate in the premier photographic event in southern Africa. The second Cape Town Month of Photography will take place from March 15 - April 14 2002. Following on the huge success of the first MoP, which featured 104 exhibitions (more than 400 photographers represented) in and around Cape Town, we are committed to putting together another superb event showcasing a range of excellent photographic exhibitions reflecting the wealth and depth of our local talent. There will be international exhibitions from Britain and Finland amongst others, as well as representation from several SADC countries. For 2002, the Month of Photography is the core visual arts component of the Cape Town Festival.

This an international, juried, bi-monthly event. The goal of the contest is to provide a forum for gif animators to show off their handiwork. The animation must be an original created by you. Higher scores are awarded to those animations which use original artwork. Judges look for originality, creativity, humour, download time, visual impact and technical proficiency. Animations must not exceed 100k.

Gallery 111 invites all creative artists, poets and experimental musicians and performance artists to submit proposals for exhibitions and performances. The gallery in its new venue is at present compiling a time table of events for the coming year and beyond.

There are two distinct areas at the gallery; the ground level and the basement. The basement is suitable for performance work and also has conventional gallery hanging facilities. There is a bar and kitchen area for all catering needs adjoining the basement. The ground level is a high ceilinged space ideal for all types of work and has numerous electricity outlets suitable for video and other new media installations. There are a number of transitional spaces such as the entrance area and stairwell which can be utilised for small exhibitions and installations.

Gallery 111 encourages the participation of student artists and other beginners. We offer art tuition and life drawing conducted by Maggie Dunbar and Jeff Lok. As the need arises there will be computer graphics courses for fine artists.

The gallery is available for private functions. There is safe parking in Commissioner Street and when there are gallery openings and functions we have a visible security presence. An added attraction is the availability of Big J's sports pub upstairs which serves drinks and meals at very good prices and has dart boards and a pool table. The gallery is situated on a major bus and taxi route. If you need to view the gallery it is advisable to phone 083 763 8216 to make an appointment as the space is run on a part-time basis by volunteers. Costs involved with exhibitions and functions are highly negotiable and are tailored to each event.

The Djerassi Resident Artists Program offers four-week residencies, at no cost, to artists in the disciplines of media arts/new genres, literature, choreography, music composition and visual arts. The program is located in a spectacular rural setting in the Santa Cruz Mountains, one hour south of San Francisco. The Nagasawa Art Park Artist-in-Residence: Workshop Program for Japanese Woodblock Printmaking is an annual, six to eight week program which involves training in the traditional Japanese techniques of woodblock printmaking. It takes place in the rural district of Nagasawa (Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan). The program was begun in 1997 as part of the Nagasawa Art Park Pilot Project (a local government plan for rural community revitalisation) and in the past has received the support of Tsuna Town, the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Japan Foundation, among others. Thus far a total of 19 artists and printers have come from all over the world (Asia, Europe, Oceania, North America) and enjoyed the extremely rare opportunity to receive training in woodblock printmaking from master craftspeople. Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder (LKV) was established in 1993. The name means "artists' workshops in Lademoen" (Lademoen is the name of a part of Trondheim). LKV contains 34 artists' studios, 6 workshops and 2 guest studios. The studios and workshops are located in an old school building dating from the turn of the century. The five-storey building has a total floor area of 2 264m². In addition to 34 private studios the facility also includes two project rooms at 90 and 55m² respectively. Over the last 6 years we have built up a printmaking workshop, photographic dark room, metal and welding workshop, carpentry, a computer room and digital video editing suite. LKV is run as a foundation.

LKV offers two guest studios (50m², headroom 3,8m). The studios contain some basic tools (hammer, screwdrivers, stapler etc). The studio flats (30m², fully furnished accommodation includes bedroom/living room, kitchen and bathroom) are located in a connected building. Both the studios and the flats are provided free of charge to artists from all over the world for a duration of 1 to 3 months. Longer residency can be negotiated in special circumstances. The rent for the studios is paid by the local authorities.

Residents may be asked to give lectures about their work for other artists in Trondheim. LKV does not have a gallery, any exhibition must take place in the studio, in one of our project rooms or outside LKV's premises. Guest artists may use the workshops by paying a fee. The guest artists are selected once a year by a committee of 3 professional artists on the basis of applications with slides or other documentation of work.

Trondheim is situated in the centre of Norway and lies on a fjord two hours from the open sea. The city is surrounded by a fine landscape of agricultural land, forests, hills and highlands with more mountainous regions to the south and east. Trondheim is the 3rd largest city in Norway. The city has throughout history been a cultural, spiritual, commercial and an educational centre including the University (NTNU) with institutes for film and drama, philosophy, anthropology, architecture, industrial design, construction technology and technical research. Trondheim has a rich cultural life with an art academy, music conservatory, symphony orchestra, concert hall, theatres, cinemas, clubs, bars and cafes.

The Arts Council of Switzerland, Pro Helvetia, is currently investigating the possibilities of a dance residency project in Switzerland. The residency would serve the needs of South African choreographers in their artistic research. In addition, the project aims to favour cross-cultural encounters between the two countries.

The Swiss partners of this project are involved in a contemporary and avant-garde art network. As such we have opted to work with contemporary or avant-garde dancers/choreographers from South Africa rather than with traditional or classical dance. This choice is not the result of classification of any kind, but rather assures the compatibility of both partners.

Period and length of exchange
Provisionally, a two-month stay is planned, between June and September 2002, in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The National Arts Council Act No 56 of 1997 provides for the appointment of Advisory Panels in the following art fields: Craft; Dance and Choreography; Literature; Music and Opera; Multi Discipline; Theatre and Musical Theatre; Visual Arts.

Interested parties are invited to submit nominations of suitable candidates who should be experts in one or more of the above-named fields.

Nominations should be accompanied by curricula vitae and be submitted to the National Arts Council marked "Advisory Panel". Together with this, a nomination letter signed by the nominator and nominee must be submitted no later than December 15 2001.

The Act stipulates that Advisory Panelists shall:

Panelists' duties:

• Panelists shall advise Council on the merits of applications for grants and on any matter relating to the field of the arts for which they are appointed.

Many years ago a bunch of Cape Town photographers used to meet once a month at UCT to discuss their creative and/ or professional work. The evenings produced some heated debates and bruised egos but were ultimately very constructive. More recently Eric Miller initiated and hosted the iAfrika sessions and the Monday night Biocaf� evenings. We have decided to resuscitate these useful crit evenings at the Centre for Photography. They take place on the third Monday of every month at the Centre for Photography (31-37 Orange Street, Gardens) at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.

All photographers are invited to bring photographs, photo essays and/ or slides they would like to discuss, to these meetings. The works discussed will include ALL disciplines, not only documentary work. All full-time photography students are also welcome as are photographers from other parts of SA. We will use the Centre gallery space (where the Paul Weinberg show was) as there is good exhibition lighting and loads of parking.
