Trade Center Trance [1MB]
Less than a month after the World Trade Center attack, artists' responses to the tragedy are flooding onto the web (see http://newsgrist.com for documentation of some of these). Indeed, in keeping with the instantaneity of our times, the events became part of an artwork literally as they happened - captured on webcams set up by internet art pioneer Wolfgang Staehle as part of an installation at the Postmasters Gallery in Chelsea, New York.
Closer to home, Johannesburg based artist Konrad Schoeman has produced this month's multimedia project, titled TradeCenterTrance. Schoeman - who recently completed his B-Tech at Technikon Pretoria - captured the televised events using a video camera and manipulated the resulting images using Adobe Premier. The soundtrack, into which are spliced fragments of media and US government commentary, communicates something of the spellbound trance into which the world fell as the moment of impact replayed endlessly on our television screens.
Schoeman has been making digital art for five years and is included on Christian Nerf's 'Blindspot' exhibition at the new Civic Theatre gallery, The | Premises. He can be e-mailed at firstname.lastname@example.org.
