Durban gets a new alternative art space
by Virginia MacKenny
'ArtSPACE durban' - a gallery/exhibition space housed in a warehouse in the central industrial area of Umgeni, Durban - is to be officially launched in the first week of September. The project of Karen Bradtke, a Masters student in Fine Art at the Durban Institute of Technology, 'artSPACE durban' was conceived to fill a perceived gap for artists in Durban, which suffers a paucity of alternative spaces. Bradkte also hopes to encourage the increasing number of visiting international artists to stay over in Durban by providing easy access to working space.
The warehouse has a view of the sea and is light and airy. The top floor is dedicated to eight 20 square metre studio spaces that are open plan with access to toilets, a shower and kitchenette. On the floor below are two gallery spaces also available for hire and a lounge area where artists can meet, relax, read, and re-energize.
Located at 3 Millar Road, Stamford Hill, just off Umgeni Road, next to the Waste Centre, the party starts on Friday September 5 at 6pm. All those interested in checking out the space are invited.
