The 2006 Cape Town Festival

The dynamic Cape Town Festival hits the city this month with its line up of visual art, theatre and cinema. See below for a full programme.

Cape Town International Performing Arts Festival

This multi-cultural extravaganza of 62 dance, music, theatre, comedy and poetry productions, totalling a staggering 182 shows, offers stimulating and thought-provoking collaborations and provides a platform for exciting new performers. Hosted at 12 of Cape Town's top performing arts venues, an eclectic fusion of local and international flavour will ensure that there's something for everyone on this invigorating programme. Cape Town International Short Film Festival

This extraordinary cinematic experience brings you the best of local and African short films, screened daily at the Waterfront open-air amphitheatre, with Table Mountain and the Cape Town harbour providing the perfect backdrop. Movie buffs can gain an insight into the lives, hopes and dreams of people from diverse cultures living in South Africa, Africa and amongst the African Diaspora.The Short Film Festival is held in partnership with Sithengi, creators of the Cape Town International World Cinema Festival.

Cape Town International Visual Arts Festival

Bringing visual arts into the mainstream, a multitude exhibitions ranging from painting to multimedia, and photography to installation art, will be threaded throughout festival venues. Participating theatres, cafés, museums and other off-beat venues will host artworks by emerging and established artists, providing festivalgoers with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with new visual art forms, whilst enjoying theatre, music and dance performances.

Cape Town Youth Festival

This is billed as the largest youth arts and culture festival in the country, encompassing arts and culture workshops, family entertainment and visual arts exhibition. The Company's Gardens are to be transformed on Festival Youth Day (Saturday March 18) when 15 000 young people make their way there to participate in a day of top notch entertainment and activities. Learners from schools in all our communities are set to perform alongside top entertainers and the Gardens will be transformed into a performance playground with impromptu showcases by a myriad street performers.

Night Vision

This inner-city urban art party extends an open invitation to capture the 'freedom of the night' and join in the festivities in Cape Town's Long Street. Follow the Art Night Route through surrounding art galleries and quaint venues for a taste of cutting-edge visual art. Interactive live theatre, dance, and music transform the city centre into a multi-sensory playground, with sexy Samba and rollicking Ramba at Dance On the Square and a cultural buzz in the Bo-Kaap. It's Ragtime with Fashion-On-Long, a funky fashion show bringing you the latest trends in threads by Cape Town's fashion designing jet-set.

Human Rights Day Celebration

An inspiring celebration to promote and affirm the basic human rights of all people through music, traditional blessings and words of wisdom by local dignitaries. This concert-in-the-park will see local and pan-African musicians performing contemporary World music in the serene, picturesque setting of the Gardens. Entrance is free.

The Cape Town International Hip Hop Festival

An exciting new initiative of the Cape Town Festival, the Hip Hop Festival represents the vibrant local sub-culture that is Cape Town's response to the global Hip Hop phenomenon. More than a music style, Hip Hop is a music culture with a mission - to act as a mouthpiece for the social conscience and engage audiences with positive messages for social reform.

A lineup of our finest breakdancers, Hip-Hop artists, B-Boys, Spoken Word and Graffiti artists will spin, break and rap you into the vibe. Performers include Black Noise, Brasse Vannie Kaap, Godessa, Sky 189, Ubuntu Breakdance Team & Chain Reaction

Festival Imbizo

Born out of the 'Culture Talks' of previous festivals, the Festival Imbizo's will see cultural industry leaders and stakeholders seated around the same table as artists, media representatives and community activists to address critical issues pertaining to the crucial role of arts and culture. Essentially a discussion and debate series, the Festival Imbizo's will see over 400 thought leaders exchanging views and taking a bold look at the future role of South Africa in the rapidly developing world of cultural industries.
