artSPACE berlin opening
The following news item has been sent to us by Karen Bradtke who opened a new branch of artSPACE Durban last month in Berlin, as we reported in NEWS last month.
artSPACE berlin opened on Thursday, June 14 at 7 pm and we managed to shut the door at 1.30am.
Our first visitor of the night was Art South Africa editor Sean O'Toole, who happened to be visiting Berlin. Tim Healey and Graeme Roberts flew over from London on their first visit to Berlin. Cape founder Susan Glanville-Zini and artist Luan Nel popped in after a very long trip up to Berlin from the Venice Biennale. It was off to Dokumenta the next day for Nel.
The rest of the opening night crowd comprised Berlin-based artists of all nationalities, other gallerists, artSPACE berlin's neighbours, and people popping in to see what the new gallery in town had to offer.
The first exhibition is titled 'A4 from Durban', comprising prints by seven artists who all live in and around Durban, although they come from various places. The participating artists are: Barry Truter, Ezequiel Mabote, Isaac Sithole, Malibongwe Shangase, Khanyisile Busi Zulu, Gabisile Nkosi, and Kristin Hua Yang. We have had positive comments and much interest in the artists and their work.
