International Artists in full force at 53rd Venice Biennale

Tomás Saraceno, Hans Peter Feldman, John Baldassari, Lara Favaretto, Lygia Pape, Steve McQueen, Miranda July and Aleksandra Mir at Venice Biennale

Sprawling across Venice from the central sites of the Giardini and Arsenale to collateral events dotted across the lagoon, nudging even into cyberspace with the founding of an Internet Pavilion, the 53rd Biennale di Venezia is unmappable.  This is its greatest strength.

For the footsore and mind-fatigued visitor, its physical and aesthetic landscapes are a shifting terrain, subject to the ebb and flow of larger currents, making it difficult, yet ultimately rewarding to navigate. Significantly, Daniel Birnbaum’s chosen title ‘Fare Mondi (Making Worlds)’, with its logo of abstracted flag forms, reflects a state of globalization in which art actively creates spaces and articulates journeys that can no longer be understood through the discourses of identity or nationality. This produces a dynamic tension given the history of the biennial format; a tension explored in the offerings of several individual artists as well as pavilions this year with varying success.
