Artbio: Cecil Skotnes - Issue No. 106, June 2006 Is there any other country where the subject of Biennales so divides the art world? The pros believe the international focus is essential to raising the profile of the whole art scene, the cons that with limited resources we should be concentrating on the local. A chief spokesperson for the cons is Mario Pissarra, who took three years to take issue (on his website) with an ArtThrob review of the 2003 Venice Biennale, and a piece written at the same time by SANG director Marilyn Martin. In the opposite corner and speaking up for the pros is Malcolm Payne, who argues for the inestimable value of Biennales in this month's OPINION.

2009

- Issue No. 138, February 2009 In 'The $12 Million Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art and Auction Houses', Don Thompson, a business professor at Toronto's York University, points out that contemporary art operates much like branding, presumably to the shock of a buying public that often still clings to notions of art's purity and criticality. Thompson's thesis is that sneaky perception, scaffolding and water-tight control of supply mix with a healthy side order of withering snobbery, to artificially inflate prices way beyond reason. Whether it's art, condos or sneakers, buyers are at the mercy of branding, which chiefly operates to justify extortionate prices.

Issue No. 137, January 2009
The new year traditionally begins slowly in the South African art world, as many galleries, studios and publications take their sweet time in getting started. But this year will certainly be a crucial one for many, as the climate of economic uncertainty curbs any laurel-resting. February and March, by contrast, promise to be industrious bordering on frenetic, as we build up to the second Joburg Art Fair in early April.
Shows to entice you out of your slumber this month include Robyn Penn's new body of paintings at Johannesburg's Brodie/Stevenson, and Deborah Bell's exhibition at the Goodman Gallery Cape. Also, Johannes Phokela and David Andrew have separate but concurrent shows in the two spaces of Johannesburg's Standard Bank Gallery. That's good enough reason to put down the turkey leftovers, pack away the Tannenbaum and head on out.
