Last week: Well, it wouldn't be the FNB Vitas unless a new controversy was set up, would it. In an opinion piece in News, one of the judges, Virginia MacKenny, wonders whether it is appropriate for other artistic skills such as curatorship to have come into the reckoning of which artists should be the finalists. There is little doubt that the international profile of artists from South Africa is on the up and up. Just check international listings. This week, new listings include Mozambique, Brussels and New York - and next week, a listing will appear for a major show for Candice Breitz in Linz, Austria.

Do not on any acount miss the three new shows which have opened in adjacent galleries at the SANG - curated separately, the three - 'Inferno and Paradise', 'In View of You' and 'Exchange Values: Images of Invisible Lives' resonate amazingly off each other.

Note down Thursday May 3: the Tandoor in Rockey Street will hosts a large-scale video projection piece by Brazilian-Swiss collaborative pair, Mauricio Dias and Walter Riedweg, to be installed on the roof garden.
