'Right of Admission'
Alberta Whittle and Farieda Nazier at ROOM Gallery/ProjectsIn a series of performative actions the artists Farieda Nazier and Alberta Whittle will contest the visible and invisible boundaries in Johannesburg. Using the physicality of the body and its appearance as markers for access, identity, this performance functions as an intervention intended to challenge the 'accepted narrative, which insists on an economic and social hierarchy of pilgrimage and aspiration.'
Essentially, this narrative illustrates the extent of power and influence that is embodied in such centers as Sandton City, as well as unspoken rules that govern accessibility to public domains that connects it to the rest of Johannesburg- such as the Gautrain. As a result, this intervention will be a journey that is traversed ‘backwards’ to undo these aspirations.
