In the heart of Joburg’s CBD lies an exclusive art building known to the locals as ‘The Artist’s Playground’. To the outsider it’s a mere 1940’s historic structure, but inside is where the magic lives. Breathtaking art, talented local artists, and grand colourful canvases line the walls and rooms of this five-story building. August House gives artists a unique creative hub and the freedom to ‘be’. With it’s high columns, authentic architecture and massive open plan floors, it’s a wonderful blend of inspiration and stillness.
Diane Victor, long-standing resident at August House, adds: ‘I enjoy the architecture and the space because it suits my methodology and work process, providing me with enough space where surrounded by other artists I am still on my own. I enjoy that artists like Sam Nhlengethwa, Mary Sibande, Colbert Mashile and Nelson Makamo are working in the building. The area is somewhat edgy and this sharpens my instincts and keeps me aware of my surroundings which is good for an artist’.
August House is the epitome of the place where proud local South African talent meets international convention and interest.
