Candice Breitz And Mohau Modisakeng To Represent South Africa At The 57th Venice Biennale In 2017

A story by Artthrob on the 2nd of November 2016. This should take you < 1 minute to read.

Candice Breitz and Mohau Modisakeng will represent South Africa at the 57th Venice Biennale’s South African Pavilion in 2017.

The South African Department of Arts and Culture has appointed Connect Channel to organise the major two-person exhibition which will be curated by Lucy MacGarry, curator of the FNB Joburg Art Fair from 2014-2016. Acting Chief Curator at the Johannesburg Art Gallery Musha Neluheni will serve as Assistant Curator.

Lucy MacGarry notes:

“We are truly thrilled that Breitz and Modisakeng will be representing South Africa. Breitz’s photographs and multi-channel video installations offer nuanced studies of the structure of identity under global capitalism, while Modisakeng employs a highly personal language to express ideas about his own identity and the body. This marks the first time that Modisakeng and Breitz will be shown alongside each other in the context of a significant exhibition.”

The South African Pavilion will run from 13th May – 26th November 2017 at the Sale D’Armi, Arsenale.
More information can be found here.

Update: Our staff will be posting images live from Venice and conducting interviews with the artists during the Press Preview May 9 – 13th!
