In Memory of David Koloane (1938-2019)

A story by Artthrob on the 1st of July 2019. This should take you < 1 minute to read.

It is with sadness that we mark the passing of David Koloane, one of South Africa’s great artists, educators and curators.

While we prepare a fuller tribute, here are some highlights from our archive:

Kathryn Smith wrote about his inner city aesthetics. She considers Koloane’s boisterous and vivid pastels. (You’ll need to scroll down a bit to find the article)

Sean O’Toole’s brief biography of Koloane. It’s a little outdated, but there are some fantastic quotes about and from Koloane

Brenton Maart considered his complex relationship with modernism and post-colonialism in a review of his 2003 ‘Rituals’.

More recently, Khanya Mashabela draws a line from Koloane to contemporary figurative expressionists Misheck Masamvu and Portia Zvavahera
